Description
Date Masamune is one of the central characters from the Sengoku Basara franchise, which includes the anime adaptation Sengoku Basara - Samurai Kings. He is the young, charismatic, and highly ambitious leader of the Date clan, ruling over the region of Oshu. Known throughout Japan by his fearsome nickname, the One-Eyed Dragon of Oshu, his character is a fictionalized take on the historical samurai of the same name, designed to embody a modern and flamboyant sense of style.

Masamune is easily recognized by his distinctive appearance, which includes medium-length brown hair and a black eyepatch covering his right eye. He wears an azure blue suit of armor and a black helmet adorned with a large golden crescent moon, a design choice intended to contrast with his primary rival, Sanada Yukimura, whose signature color is red. His horse is equally unique, designed to resemble a modern motorcycle complete with handlebars emerging from its mane and an exhaust pipe, and Masamune often rides it with his arms crossed in a relaxed, confident posture.

In terms of personality, Masamune is brash, cocky, and overflowing with self-confidence, especially on the battlefield. He thrives on excitement and often refers to a major battle as a party, treating combat as a thrilling challenge rather than a grim duty. This energetic and reckless demeanor is balanced by a quieter, more thoughtful side when he is off the battlefield or in the privacy of his own territory. He is a decisive leader who cares deeply for his men and discusses important strategies openly with his retainers, most notably his trusted second-in-command, Kojuro Katakura. While he appears arrogant and often speaks in a unique mixture of Japanese and English, this behavior masks a surprisingly rational and caring nature, as his ultimate motivation is to create a peaceful world where people can live without fear, not simply to conquer for the sake of power.

Masamune's central role in the story is defined by his ambition to unite Japan and his unwavering refusal to submit to any other warlord, including the fearsome Oda Nobunaga. His most significant relationship is his legendary rivalry with Sanada Yukimura of the Takeda clan. This rivalry is built on mutual respect and a shared passion for battle, with each warrior constantly seeking to test his strength against the other. They are portrayed as fated rivals who, despite being enemies, can put aside their differences to face a greater threat, such as when they join forces to defeat the demonic Nobunaga. Equally important is his bond with Kojuro Katakura, his chief retainer and closest friend, often called the Right Eye of the Dragon. Kojuro acts as Masamune's grounding force, offering counsel, reining in his lord's more reckless impulses, and protecting him from harm. Masamune's trust and reliance on Kojuro are absolute.

Throughout his story, Masamune undergoes significant development, primarily shaped by his defeats. In the first season, he is shaken by his first encounter with the overwhelming power of Oda Nobunaga, which instills a rare moment of fear in him. However, he overcomes this by disbanding his own army to inspire Yukimura and face the devil king directly. A more humbling defeat comes at the hands of the massive warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who easily wounds him and leaves him powerless. This loss forces Masamune to confront his limitations and later fuels his drive for revenge and redemption. In the subsequent battle of Sekigahara against Hideyoshi's vengeful retainer, Mitsunari Ishida, Masamune is nearly killed but ultimately survives, demonstrating his incredible resilience and determination to fight another day.

Masamune's notable abilities are as flashy as his personality. He is a master swordsman who, when fighting seriously, wields six katana simultaneously—three in each hand, held between his fingers. These swords are known as his Dragon Claws, and he channels the element of electricity or lightning through his attacks, adding a dazzling and destructive edge to his already formidable skills. His fighting style is aggressive and acrobatic, perfectly complementing his loud and confident battle cry, "Let's party!".
