"Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life" centers on the Tokise High School koto club, a traditional Japanese string instrument ensemble struggling to maintain its existence due to a lack of members. The story begins with Chika Kudō, a delinquent with a troubled past, joining the club to honor his late grandfather, a master koto craftsman. Despite initial skepticism from club president Takezō Kurata and other members, Chika’s genuine passion for the koto becomes evident. Satowa Hōzuki, a prodigious koto player from a prestigious musical family, also joins the club, bringing her exceptional skills but initially clashing with Chika due to their contrasting personalities and backgrounds.

As the club works to recruit more members, they face challenges such as internal conflicts, societal prejudices, and the pressure of preparing for the national koto competition. Each character’s personal struggles are explored, including Chika’s efforts to overcome his reputation and Satowa’s strained relationship with her family.
