Description
Isaki Kudō is the paternal aunt of Chika Kudō, the protagonist of the story. Following the death of Chika’s grandfather, she becomes his legal guardian, providing him with a home and a stable environment in her high-rise apartment. Her decision to take him in is a pivotal act of care, as she locates him after a confrontation with his father and offers him shelter, which ultimately reconnects him to his grandfather’s legacy through the koto club at Tokise High School.

In terms of appearance, Isaki is a young adult woman with shoulder-length black hair and a polished fashion sense that contributes to a striking and elegant presence often remarked upon by others. Her physical attributes include black eyes, a height of 164 centimeters, and a birthday on November 30. Her personality is strong, blunt, and quick-tempered, bearing a notable resemblance to her nephew in this regard. She is fiercely independent and not one to be defied easily by Chika, often teasing him or delivering light physical reprimands. Despite her brusque exterior, she demonstrates care through solid advice and discreet support, making her a reliable older figure who balances discipline with genuine affection. This is exemplified by her tendency to walk around the house casually and leave her belongings scattered, treating their shared living space with an ease that underscores the familial comfort between them.

Isaki’s motivations are rooted in her role as a caretaker and a supporter of the next generation. She works to anchor Chika during his turbulent adolescence, offering him not just a place to live but also emotional grounding. Furthermore, she takes an active interest in his personal happiness, particularly in his relationship with his clubmate Satowa Hōzuki. Isaki often tries to set the two up and later acknowledges the depth of their mutual feelings in a composed and candid manner. Her role in the story is primarily that of a supportive guardian for the koto club members from the sidelines. While she does not participate in the musical performances, she provides a welcoming home base for Chika and his friends, offers adult perspective, and is shown celebrating the club’s achievements, such as their national tournament win, with homemade cake.

Key relationships define Isaki’s presence in the narrative. Her bond with her nephew, Chika, is central; she cares for him, often hits him playfully, and has given him a very small sleeping space in her apartment that can be expanded at night. She is also close to Suzuka Takinami, a math teacher at Tokise High, who is her former schoolmate and senior. They became friends during a training camp where Suzuka taught Isaki how to cook, and their camaraderie has endured beyond their school years. Her relationship with Chika’s estranged father is also significant. When Chika’s father visits to apologize and attempt a reconciliation, Isaki facilitates the tense family dinner and is shown to be eager for her brother to reconnect with his son, joyfully suggesting he move closer to them.

Isaki undergoes subtle but meaningful development through her care for Chika. She moves from simply providing a roof over his head to actively fostering his emotional growth and happiness. In a key moment, when Chika insists he is happy but declares Satowa to be essential for his future happiness, Isaki observes the scene and internally surrenders to their relationship, recognizing its seriousness. Later, when Chika’s father asks him to return home, Isaki proudly declares that Chika is like her own child and that she would never ask him to leave, solidifying her role from temporary guardian to permanent family. She is also part of a moving moment where Chika, eating a strawberry cake she made, thanks her with tears in his eyes, showing her success in creating a nurturing environment.

In terms of notable abilities, Isaki seems to have a well-paying but unspecified profession, as she lives in an expensive-looking apartment. She learned to cook with help from Suzuka Takinami, though her skills may be somewhat unrefined, as a cake she made is noted by her brother to be crunchy. Her primary abilities are not artistic but relational and practical: she is a capable guardian, a sharp observer of people’s feelings, and a discreet matchmaker. Her personal preferences include enjoying sake and spending money freely on holidays, as well as sleeping in to the utmost extent.
