Description
Hirudegarn is the central antagonist of the 1995 animated film Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon. It is an enormous and destructive creature, often classified as a Phantom Majin, whose existence is defined by chaos and devastation.

The background of Hirudegarn is rooted in tragedy and corruption. Originally, it was not a monster but a benevolent entity on the planet Konats. It existed as a kind of demon god or protective spirit that inhabited a statue, where its role was to watch over the planet's inhabitants and purify their hearts by absorbing any evil ki that arose within them. This peaceful existence was shattered by the arrival of the Kashvar, a race of star-traveling dark magicians. Using their forbidden arts, the Kashvar corrupted and transformed the entity into a Phantom Majin, a mindless engine of destruction. In this new form, Hirudegarn broke free from its statue and began a rampage that laid waste to Konats.

No other emotion is displayed by Hirudegarn beyond pure hatred and unfocused rage. It possesses no capacity for reason, speech, or complex motivations. Its entire purpose, after its transformation, is to destroy everything and everyone in its path, seemingly for the sake of destruction itself. While it appears to follow the will of its master, the magician Hoi, this obedience is shallow, as it ends up accidentally crushing him underfoot without any hesitation or acknowledgment. Its focus remains singular: to annihilate any life it encounters.

The role of Hirudegarn in the story is that of an unstoppable, ancient apocalypse that has been unleashed upon the Earth. Its history is told through the character of Tapion, a hero from Konats who, along with his brother Minotia, managed to stop the monster a thousand years prior. Using enchanted ocarinas, they froze Hirudegarn in place long enough for a wizard to cleave it in half with a divine sword. Unable to be killed, its upper body was sealed within Tapion and its lower half within Minotia. The two brothers were then placed in separate music boxes and launched to opposite ends of the universe to ensure the monster could never be made whole again. The film's plot is set in motion when Hoi, the last of the Kashvar, kills Minotia and travels to Earth to retrieve Tapion and complete the monster's revival. Once resurrected, Hirudegarn serves as the ultimate physical threat, forcing all the Earth's mightiest warriors, including Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and the fused Gotenks, into a desperate battle.

Key relationships for Hirudegarn are less about interaction and more about containment and opposition. Its primary relationship is with Hoi, the mage who seeks to control and revive it, only to be treated as an insignificant obstacle. The most significant connection is with Tapion, who acts as the vessel for half of the monster's being. Their existence is intrinsically linked; Tapion's suffering is directly caused by the monster sealed within him, and he spends much of the film trying to keep Hirudegarn contained, even offering his own life to destroy it. The creature has no relationship of any kind with the Z-Fighters, who are simply targets in its path of destruction.

The development of Hirudegarn is primarily physical rather than emotional or psychological. It begins in a partially revived state, first appearing only as a rampaging lower half. Upon its full resurrection, it is a towering, vaguely humanoid creature with a skull-like head and a long tail. After withstanding a powerful assault from Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks, Hirudegarn undergoes a metamorphosis or evolution, shedding its damaged outer husk to reveal a transformed state. In this new form, it grows larger, gains insectoid wings, large horns, and shoulder blades, becoming even more powerful and bestial in appearance.

Hirudegarn is noted for a set of formidable and distinct abilities. Its most dangerous trait is its phantom-like intangibility. For most of its existence, its body is described as being like a phantom, mist, or shadow, making it completely immune to physical attacks and energy blasts. The only moment it becomes solid and vulnerable is when it is in the act of launching its own attack. This forces its opponents to adopt a risky, reactive strategy. It also possesses the ability to absorb the life force of its victims, often using its tail to capture and drain them. Other offensive powers include breathing fire and launching powerful dark energy blasts from its mouth. Its speed is deceptive, as it can vanish and reappear in a different location by transforming into smoke, a technique that resembles teleportation. Eventually, after being pushed by the powerful attacks of Gotenks, it demonstrates the ability to shed its form and transform into an even stronger, more destructive final state.
