Description
Bazel Sakaki is a soldier working for the International Solarsystem Development Agency (ISDA) where he serves as the military commander of the Dragonaut unit. He is a human male who carries the weight of a profound personal tragedy. Two years before the events of the story, he lost his wife Martina and his daughter Laura in a shuttle accident, the same disaster that claimed the family of the protagonist Jin Kamishina. This event has left him with a burning obsession to destroy the asteroid Thanatos, which was responsible for the catastrophe.
In his role as commander, Sakaki is a pragmatist who believes that the D-Project, which involves the use of dragons, should be made public. He was also the one who originally suggested using dragons as a means to destroy Thanatos. His single-minded focus on eliminating the threat to Earth leads him to continue working for the ISDA even when the organization falls under the command of the enigmatic Gillard, as he perceives all dragons as a potential danger to the planet's safety.
Despite his rigid and often harsh exterior, Sakaki has a complex and contradictory nature. He shows a notable leniency towards the rogue pilot Kazuki Tachibana, repeatedly overlooking Kazuki's violations of orders and acts of insubordination. This tolerance ultimately enables Kazuki's increasingly violent and unstable behavior. His personal motivations also cloud his professional judgment in a far more intimate way. He secretly resonates with a dragon named Raum, a creature he uses as a tool to capture other dragons. However, Raum has been made to take on the physical appearance of his deceased daughter, Laura. While he initially treats this dragon as nothing more than an asset, he occasionally displays signs of concern for her, revealing the deep emotional wound left by his family's death.
Sakaki's most significant development occurs when the true nature of his daughter's dragon identity is exposed. Forced to confront his feelings, he ultimately rebels against the ISDA, admitting his love for Raum and choosing to treat her as his real daughter. He then joins forces with Jin and the other protagonists to rescue her. After successfully saving her, he suffers a fatal wound. With his last strength, he uses his power to propel Jin and Kazuki towards space for their final mission, sacrificing himself and disappearing alongside the dragon who had become his daughter once more.
