Description
Joe Sakurai is a pivotal figure in the world of stride, primarily known as the coach of the Kakyoin High School stride club and the father of Nana Sakurai. He is a man in his late thirties, standing at 181 centimeters tall, with black hair and brown eyes. His typical appearance includes a grey suit, a white dress shirt, and black sunglasses. He was born on April 16.

Widely recognized by the nickname "King of Stride," Sakurai is credited as the driving force behind the popularization and spread of stride throughout Japan. His passion for the sport is immense, and he dedicated much of his career to promoting it, including a period of time spent working in the United States. This dedication, however, came at a significant personal cost. Sakurai is known to be extremely career-focused, a characteristic that created a deep emotional distance between him and his daughter, Nana, whom he has been absent from for many years, since she was in middle school. When asked about his work, he never spoke of it, leaving Nana unaware of his legendary status within the sport they both loved.

Within the story, Sakurai returns to Japan after accepting a position as a coach for the Kakyoin Stride Club. He also convinced Tomoe Yagami, a former star strider, to join him at Kakyoin after their encounter in the United States. His role as a coach places him and his team in direct competition with Honan Academy, the school his daughter attends and serves as the relationer for. This dynamic creates the central conflict of his appearance, as he is forced to face Nana not as family, but as an opponent. During a time trial race against Honan, he looks at his daughter coldly through his sunglasses, emphasizing his role as a rival coach above all else. This encounter, including the public revelation of Nana's identity as his daughter, becomes a crucial moment for her character, as she confronts the complicated feelings of trauma and anxiety stemming from his absence.

Sakurai's background is connected to other influential figures in the stride community. He was a high school classmate of Yujiro Dan, a teacher at Honan Academy, as well as a woman named Sakura and another named Kouichi. These relationships, along with his work with Tomoe Yagami, highlight his long-standing and deep involvement in the sport across different generations. Despite his emotional detachment, his reputation as a pioneer and his skill in leading a team to outperform rivals, as seen in the time trial against Honan, solidify his status as a legendary and highly capable figure within the world of stride.
