TV-Series
Description
Saya Kisaragi is a seemingly ordinary high school girl living in a quiet, rural town. She serves as the shrine maiden at her family's shrine and leads a peaceful life, surrounded by friends and her father, Tadayoshi Kisaragi. However, Saya has a hidden duty: she is a skilled swordswoman tasked with protecting the town from monstrous creatures known as Elders. These beings emerge at night, preying on humans, and Saya battles them with her katana, guided by a mysterious talking dog named Tadayoshi, who shares her father's name.

As the series progresses, Saya begins to notice inconsistencies in her surroundings. Strange occurrences, such as recurring dreams and cryptic warnings from Tadayoshi, suggest that her reality may not be as it seems. The townspeople exhibit odd behavior, and the Elders' attacks grow increasingly coordinated and personal. Saya's memories are fragmented, and she struggles to reconcile her dual roles as a high school student and a warrior. Her relationships with her classmates, particularly Fumito Nanahara, a boy who seems to know more than he lets on, add layers of tension and intrigue.

The narrative takes a darker turn as Saya uncovers the truth about her existence. The town is revealed to be an elaborate experiment orchestrated by Fumito, who is part of a secretive organization. The Elders are not random monsters but constructs designed to test Saya's abilities and mental resilience. The experiment aims to awaken her true nature as a powerful being capable of immense destruction. As Saya grapples with this revelation, her world unravels, leading to a climactic confrontation that exposes the full extent of the manipulation she has endured.

The series explores themes of identity, memory, and the nature of reality, blending action, horror, and psychological drama. Saya's journey from a seemingly ordinary girl to a figure of immense power is marked by violence, betrayal, and self-discovery. The supporting cast, including her classmates and the enigmatic Tadayoshi, play crucial roles in shaping her understanding of the world and her place within it. The story's intricate plot and gradual unraveling of mysteries keep the narrative engaging, culminating in a finale that leaves a lasting impact.

1The Chirping of Birds
Saya Kisaragi lives in a small town with her father Tadayoshi, the priest of a shrine. She attends school, sings in the choir, and helps serve coffee at her father's shop. At night, a creature resembling a white dog appears and reminds her of a contract to fight Elder Bairns. During a local festival, an Elder Bairn attacks the townspeople. Saya runs to the shrine and retrieves a sword from a sacred box. She confronts the monster and cuts it down, but the creature regenerates. The white dog tells her to cut the red core inside the monster's body. Saya strikes the core, and the monster dissolves into blood. After the battle, her friend Nene expresses concern about Saya's frequent absences. Saya returns to the coffee shop where a mysterious man named Fumito Nanahara sits waiting. Fumito speaks to Saya's father about the contract and Saya's role as the shrine's guardian. Saya does not recognize Fumito, but he smiles and calls her by name. The episode ends with Saya washing blood from her hands, unaware that Fumito controls the dog creature.

Saya finds her father Tadayoshi lying dead in their home from a wound inflicted by an Elder Bairn. She takes his sword and goes to the shrine where the priest Nono waits. Nono explains that the Elder Bairn are not ancient monsters but humans infected with a parasite created in a laboratory. He reveals that the entire town, including all residents, exists as a controlled experiment to observe Saya's combat abilities. The cafe owner Fumito enters and confirms that he orchestrated the deaths of Saya's classmates and her father. Fumito states that Saya's true nature is that of a prototype weapon designed to fight and consume the infected humans. Saya realizes that every monster she killed was a person she knew, including her friend Tokizane who transformed earlier. She falls to her knees and vomits from the shock. Nono hands her a bottle of the monsters' blood, which Saya had been drinking as a tonic, and tells her to continue fighting. Saya refuses and screams, but Fumito activates a device on her sword that forces her to transform into a monstrous form. The episode ends with Saya losing consciousness as her body changes, and Fumito smiles, stating the next phase begins.
10The Moon
Saya Kisaragi enters the Ukishima shrine and finds Fumito Nanahara waiting. Fumito states that the Elder Bairns she fought were once humans transformed through his experiments. He reveals that Tadayoshi Kisaragi, her father, is an automated puppet with no consciousness. The town of Ukishima exists as a constructed set, and all residents except Saya are actors following a script. The deaths of Nono, Itsuki, and other villagers occurred as planned, though the actors died permanently. Fumito explains that he created the contract binding Saya to her sword: the blade materializes only when she fights to protect genuine humans. Since no real humans remain in Ukishima, Saya cannot draw the sword. She attempts to summon it but fails. Fumito calmly details his multi-year plan to break her pacifistic nature and unleash her original predatory instincts. Saya recalls previous battles where she killed what she thought were monsters, realizing each kill was a human victim. Fumito orders several Elder Bairns to advance on Saya. She stands without weapons or transformation ability. The first Elder Bairn lunges at Saya as she remains defenseless.
11Reverse
Saya regains consciousness inside a white laboratory room, and Fumito Nanahara stands before her. Fumito explains that the town of Ukishima is a constructed set and all its residents are actors. He reveals that the Elder Bairns Saya fought were controlled experiments, not natural monsters. Fumito states his goal: to break Saya's will by making her witness the deaths of those she believed were friends. He shows Saya that the dog she called father is actually her real father, transformed into that form as punishment for her past actions. Saya draws her sword and attacks Fumito, but her blade shatters against an invisible barrier. Fumito then summons a group of new Elder Bairns, far larger and more aggressive than the previous ones. Saya fights the creatures without her sword, using only her bare hands and agility. One Elder Bairn impales Saya through the chest with its claw, leaving her suspended in the air. As Saya hangs bleeding, Fumito unveils a mirror that reflects her own image and declares that the final Elder Bairn is Saya herself. The episode ends with Saya staring at her own reflection as the mirrored figure begins to move independently.
12The Crowning Dream
Saya awakens strapped to a chair in a white laboratory room. Fumito Nanahara enters and explains that the entire town, the shrine, her father, and her classmates were fabricated. He states that every Elder Bairn she fought and every death she witnessed served as a controlled experiment. The purpose of the experiment was to push Saya past her emotional limits and unlock her true power as a descendant of the original Saya. Fumito reveals that he killed Tadayoshi Kisaragi, Saya's real father, after Tadayoshi tried to halt the experiment. The Elder Bairns that attacked the town were never real threats; they were designed tests. The deaths of Nono, Nene, Itsuki, and the other students were intentional sacrifices to provoke Saya's despair. Fumito transforms into a large Elder Bairn and attacks Saya. Saya breaks her restraints, draws her sword, and fights him despite losing her left arm during the battle. She decapitates Fumito, killing him, and the laboratory begins to collapse. Saya walks out of the crumbling facility into a real modern city at night, alone on a bridge with her sword in hand. The post-credits scene shows a man resembling Fumito lying in a hospital bed and smiling, revealing his survival.
