Description
Kanako Tsutsutori is the homeroom teacher of Saya Kisaragi's class, and beneath her warm and easygoing exterior lies a far more complex and ruthless character. She is a beautiful woman with a glamorous appearance, characterized by long, curly honey-blond hair, murky green eyes, and pale white skin. Her typical attire consists of a long white lab coat over a green camisole, paired with a short black skirt and black high-heeled shoes, often accessorized with a necklace and rose-colored lipstick.
On the surface, Kanako presents herself as a laid-back and fun-loving teacher who enjoys interacting with her students, particularly Saya. She has a playful side, often teasing her class, but can also be stern when needed. However, this persona is a carefully constructed facade. Before becoming a teacher, Kanako was a researcher who became fascinated by ancient folklore, specifically the existence of man-eating beings known as the Elder Bairns referenced in old songs. Her academic interest grew into an obsession, but her work was largely ignored by the mainstream academic community. This frustration and her mounting deadline for publication drove her to participate in a large-scale experiment orchestrated by Fumito Nanahara, who promised her the chance to study a living specimen, Saya herself.
In the story, Kanako is initially a peripheral but supportive figure in Saya's seemingly peaceful life. Her true role, however, is that of a participant in the experiment, acting as a researcher who helps maintain the elaborate illusion of Saya's town and school life. Her primary motivation is selfish: to be the first to publish conclusive research on the Elder Bairns and the "Shrovetide," an ancient agreement that allowed them to feed on humans, thereby securing her legacy in her field. She grows increasingly impatient with Fumito, whom she resents for repeatedly prolonging the experiment by altering Saya's memories, as this delays her ability to gather final data. Her desperation ultimately leads her to betray the experiment's director.
Her key relationships are defined by her research goals. She views Saya not as a student or a person, but as her primary research subject. This obsession is twisted and possessive, as she derives a depraved satisfaction from psychologically and physically tormenting Saya when finally revealing the truth. To achieve her aim of restoring Saya's true memories, she manipulates Saya's friends, including the twins Nene and Nono Motoe and Shinichirou Tokizane. She recruits them with false promises, coldly admitting she does not care what becomes of them. Her relationship with her fellow conspirator, Fumito Nanahara, is one of mutual distrust. While he is the mastermind of the experiment, she secretly works against him, leading to a fatal confrontation.
Kanako's character undergoes a significant development from a seemingly benign teacher to a revealed villain and then to a broken victim. After forcing Saya to drink Elder Bairn blood to unlock her memories, her scheme is exposed by Fumito. In a moment of sheer terror, her confident and manipulative demeanor completely shatters as she becomes a hysterical figure desperate to escape. Ultimately, her fate is sealed when she runs for help to the one she believes is a safe haven, Saya's father Tadayoshi. Unbeknownst to her, Tadayoshi has been transformed into a feral, Elder Bairn-like creature, and he kills her by drinking her blood before decapitating her. Unlike the other characters, she possesses no supernatural abilities or combat skills; her only tools are her intellect, manipulative personality, and scholarly knowledge of the supernatural world, which ultimately prove insufficient to save her.
