Nene Motoe is a pale-skinned teenage girl with a slim build, short curly strawberry blonde hair that falls to about neck length, and a braid worn on the right side. She has green eyes, and her legs are noticeably thicker than those of most other female characters. She is the identical twin sister of Nono Motoe, and the two share the same appearance and often act in unison. As classmates of Saya Kisaragi, they initially appear playful, energetic, and friendly, speaking in a cutesy and supportive manner that suggests genuine care for Saya and the other students. However, this cheerful demeanor is later revealed to be entirely an act. Nene and Nono are part of the main cast of actors employed by Fumito Nanahara for his elaborate experiment on Saya. Their role is to maintain the illusion of normalcy in the fabricated town and to interact with Saya as ordinary high school friends. Nene’s true nature is that of an actress following a script, with no personal motivation beyond performing her assigned part. In terms of story role, Nene serves as one of the many false relationships that prop up Saya’s artificial life, and her death marks a turning point in the narrative. She is killed by the Centipede-Elder Bairn when she visits Saya at the shrine, demonstrating the violent dissolution of the experiment’s facade. Her relationship with her twin Nono is the closest bond she has, and the two are almost always seen together. Nene does not possess any supernatural abilities; she is a normal human involved in the staged drama. Her development is limited to the shift from being perceived as a harmless friend to being exposed as a fabricated element of the experiment, after which her life ends abruptly.
