TV-Series
Description
Keigo Kurusu is the head of the detective division at the Sakurami Police Station and holds the Fourth Diary in the survival game. He is a man in his thirties, described as being around 182 to 183 centimeters tall, with black hair and brown or green eyes. He is married to a woman named Naoko, who works at a wedding hall, and the couple has a young son, Yoi, who suffers from a serious, life-threatening illness requiring hospitalization. This family situation becomes the central motivation for his actions.
At the start of the story, Kurusu is characterized by a calm, friendly, and cool-headed demeanor, with a strong and genuine sense of justice. As a detective, he cannot ignore the murders caused by the diary game and initially claims to have no interest in becoming the new god, seeking instead to stop the game and bring its more dangerous players to justice. He often acts as a reliable and trustworthy ally, particularly in contrast to the more unstable characters around him, and is known for his strategic thinking and careful planning.
Kurusu's future diary is known as the Investigation Diary, or the Criminal Investigation Diary. It is a mobile phone that predicts the future status of police investigations he will personally conduct within the jurisdiction of Sakurami City. This diary is a powerful tool for tracking other diary owners, as most of them engage in criminal activities that fall under his purview. However, the diary has a critical limitation: it cannot predict anything outside his jurisdiction, provides no information on people who are not involved in crimes, and becomes completely useless if his police authority is revoked. In addition to his diary, Kurusu is a skilled police officer with complete command of the Sakurami police force. He is also an expert marksman and typically carries a revolver, being cautious enough to wear a bulletproof vest at all times.
Initially, Kurusu acts as a major ally to the protagonists, Yukiteru Amano and Yuno Gasai. He helps them defeat the Ninth Diary owner, Minene Uryuu, and the three form a team known as the Future Alliance. He continues to support the pair through several dangerous situations. However, his priorities drastically change when he learns that his son has only three months left to live. Driven to desperation, Kurusu decides he must win the survival game and become a god to save his son. This goal leads him to betray Yukiteru and Yuno, becoming an antagonist.
To eliminate his former allies, Kurusu frames them for murder and uses his police authority to hunt them down, chasing them into Sakurami City Hospital. During the final confrontation, he is severely wounded by a gunshot from Yukiteru. At the same time, his subordinate, Masumi Nishijima, acting on information from Minene, revokes Kurusu's investigative authority, rendering his future diary powerless. Facing defeat, Kurusu asks Minene to take care of his son and then destroys his own diary, causing himself to disappear from existence.
In the third world, an alternate timeline, the Second World's Minene contacts Kurusu to inform him of his son's illness in time for early treatment. This allows him to save his son, and two years later, his family lives happily together, free from the tragedies of the previous timeline.
