Aya Hisakawa
Description
Aya Hisakawa is a veteran Japanese voice actress and singer, born on November 12, 1968, in Kaizuka, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. She is affiliated with Aoni Production, a major talent management agency, and has been active in the voice acting industry since 1988.
Hisakawa's career began after she graduated from the Aoni Production-affiliated training school, Aoni Juku Tokyo School, as part of its 8th generation. Her first lead role in a television anime was as Miya Miya in the 1990 series RPG Densetsu Hepoi. The early 1990s marked a significant turning point in her career when she was cast as Ami Mizuno, also known as Sailor Mercury, in the immensely popular Sailor Moon series. This role brought her widespread recognition and established her as a prominent voice actress.
Following the success of Sailor Moon, Hisakawa continued to secure a wide variety of iconic roles, showcasing her considerable vocal range. She has played energetic and comedic characters like Skuld in Oh My Goddess! and the small form of Cerberus (Kero-chan) in Cardcaptor Sakura. Her ability to portray young boys is evident in roles such as Miki Kaoru in Revolutionary Girl Utena and Yuki Sohma in Fruits Basket. As her career progressed, she also became known for voicing mature and composed women, including Retsu Unohana in Bleach, Haruka Shitow in RahXephon, and Yuri Tsukikage (Cure Moonlight) in HeartCatch Pretty Cure!. This last role, in a long-running and beloved magical girl franchise, allowed her to play a central heroine in a genre she had helped define nearly two decades earlier.
A significant and high-profile role in her later career is succeeding the late Hiromi Tsuru as the voice of Bulma in the Dragon Ball franchise, starting with the 2018 film Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This casting was personally approved by the original manga author, Akira Toriyama. Hisakawa has also voiced a number of characters in the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series as Lindy Harlaown, and in the Precure franchise beyond her lead role, including appearances in various Precure All Stars films. The extensive list of roles provided also includes Cecily Neville in Requiem of the King, Kumi in Kemono Jihen, and many others across OVAs, television series, and films, demonstrating a prolific and enduring career.
In addition to her voice acting, Hisakawa has also worked as a singer, releasing several solo albums and singles starting in 1993. Known for using her native Kansai dialect in some of her performances, she is also recognized for her personal interests, which include animal welfare and holding qualifications such as a Level 2 Certified Pet Care Manager and an entry-level rank in kyudo (Japanese archery).
