Description
Ami Mizuno, also known as Sailor Mercury, is a teenage student in Tokyo’s Azabu-Juban district who first appears as a shy, introverted fourteen-year-old and grows into a more confident sixteen-year-old by the final season. She has blue eyes, short indigo hair, and often wears reading glasses. Her surname Mizuno means “water field,” and her given name combines characters for “Asia” or “second” with “beauty,” reflecting her title as the Second Beauty of the Water. She lives with her mother, a busy doctor, in an apartment or condominium; her parents are divorced, and her father, an artist, remains mostly absent but sends postcards, birthday cards, or an annual painting. Possessing an extraordinary intellect often rumored to be an IQ of 300, she consistently scores at the top of national exams and dreams of becoming a doctor like her mother. Initially, classmates mistake her quiet, bookish nature for arrogance, but after befriending the outgoing Usagi Tsukino, she opens up, revealing a kind, gentle, and supportive personality. Although still somewhat insecure about her social skills, she becomes the team’s voice of reason, level-headed strategist, and the second Sailor Guardian awakened by Luna.

Chanting “Mercury Power, Make Up!” to transform, she commands water and ice. Her tactical edge comes from a data-analyzing visor and a handheld super computer, which she can summon by touching her earring to scan enemies and devise battle plans. Her signature techniques include Shabon Spray (a freezing, obscuring mist), its evolved form Shabon Spray Freezing, Shine Aqua Illusion (a torrent of icy water), and later Mercury Aqua Rhapsody, which summons a lyre made of water. In the Dream arc, she ascends to Eternal Sailor Mercury, wielding the Mercury Crystal in a star-emblazoned uniform. Her journey includes sacrificing herself during the Dark Kingdom crisis and being reborn through the Silver Crystal, enduring captivity in the Black Moon arc to emerge as Super Sailor Mercury, and facing temporary defeat against Sailor Galaxia’s forces before revival. Once timid, she evolves into a composed, reliable guardian who diffuses tension with quiet diplomacy.

In her spare time, she enjoys chess, swimming, and secretly reading romance novels, though she is embarrassed by these interests. A minor recurring trait is her allergy to love letters, which causes her to break out in a rash, as seen in the Ami’s First Love subplot. She shares a fleeting psychic connection with classmate Ryo Urawa, an intellectual kinship with Mamoru Chiba, and tactical synergy with Luna. In the Sailor Stars season, she develops a mutual respect and hint of attraction with Kou Taiki of the Three Lights, though no romance blossoms. Future depictions show her guarding Neo-Queen Serenity in Crystal Tokyo. Her personal arc navigates the balance between self-worth and duty, confronting study-abroad dilemmas and parental pressures, ultimately forging an identity rooted in self-trust rather than external validation.
