Description
Kiss, also known as Kissu, is a central character who serves as the long-range Divine Attacker for the Beet Warriors. He is a childhood friend of the protagonist Beet, having formed a deep friendship with him during their shared training period when both were twelve years old. During this time, they made a pact to pursue their individual dreams: Beet vowed to end the Dark Century, while Kissu set his sights on becoming the world's greatest master of Divine Attack.
After parting ways to pursue advanced training, Kissu joined a different Buster team. This decision led to a traumatic betrayal that fundamentally altered his view of humanity. When the powerful Vandel known as Sir Baron confronted his team, Kissus comrades ordered him to act as a distraction while they prepared a powerful attack. In reality, they used him as a sacrificial decoy to facilitate their own escape. Sir Baron killed the fleeing Busters but chose to spare Kissu, acknowledging his bravery for standing his ground. This experience shattered Kissus trust in human beings, leading him to conclude that Vandels possessed greater honor. Wandering in a state of disillusionment, he encountered the Vandel Grineed, who exploited his vulnerable state. Kissu began working for Grineed, deciphering ruins that helped the Vandel create monsters from earthly materials. To ensure Kissus obedience and prevent him from using his Divine Power, Grineed fitted him with a poisonous bracelet that would inject venom as punishment.
Kissus eventual reunion with Beet forced him into a painful internal conflict, torn between his loyalty to the Vandel master and his old friend. During a battle against Grineeds subordinate Rozzgoat, Kissu defended a weakened Beet and definitively rejected Grineed, rejoining Beets cause. Beet removed the poisoned bracelet and saved Kissus life, after which Kissu formally joined the Beet Warriors.
In terms of personality, Kissu is defined by a sharp contrast between his exceptional intellectual abilities and his deep-seated emotional insecurities. He possesses a genius-level intellect, capable of rapidly analyzing enemy tactics, noticing the smallest details, and devising effective countermeasures in a matter of seconds. This makes him the primary strategist of the Beet Warriors, often leading the team even though Beet is the nominal leader. Despite this brilliance, Kissu is plagued by self-doubt, cowardice, and a lack of confidence in his own abilities. He is acutely aware of his weaknesses and often puts himself down, feeling insecure about his contributions compared to his more physically robust teammates. His tendency toward cowardice is most pronounced when confronting the Vandel Sir Baron, whose reappearance triggers Kissus past trauma, causing him to freeze in terror or flee from battle. This behavior leads to overwhelming guilt, especially when his actions result in danger for his friends like Poala. Despite these flaws, Kissu demonstrates resilience by repeatedly confronting his fears, and in critical situations, he consistently proves himself to be a reliable and invaluable strategist.
Kissus role in the story is that of the Beet Warriors long-range specialist and tactical mind. He balances the more impulsive and physically oriented Beet, providing strategic oversight and analytical support in combat. However, his past service under a Vandel marks him as a fugitive within the Buster Association. After Grineed is defeated, Kissu must face a trial for his crimes, though the Broad Buster Milfa, recognizing the faith his team has in him, escorts the Beet Warriors to support him.
Key relationships define much of Kissus development. His friendship with Beet is the anchor of his redemption, as Beet helps him regain his faith in humanity. He also develops a romantic interest in Poala, another member of the team, and there are hints of mutual romantic tension or unacknowledged crushes involving him and the Broad Buster Milfa, with whom he is often paired in battles. Kissu also shares a significant bond with fellow warrior Gala, whose encouragement helps Kissu resolve to confront Sir Baron directly.
Kissus development throughout the narrative centers on overcoming his trauma and self-doubt. His arc involves repeated failures when facing Sir Baron, each instance plunging him into despair. However, through the support of his friends and his own inner resolve, he continually works to stand his ground and commit fully to his teams mission. He also struggles with the physical aftereffects of serving Grineed, as the two-year suppression of his abilities left him out of practice and with poor stamina, often lagging behind during travel.
In terms of notable abilities, Kissu is exceptionally rare among Busters because he is a master of all five elemental types of Divine Power: Fire, Wind, Water, Thunder, and Light. Most Busters can only wield one element. His fighting style is highly deceptive and tactical. He typically launches arrows of light that conceal another elemental attack within them, making it difficult for opponents to predict what type of assault is coming and allowing him to alternate their effects unpredictably. Defensively, he is skilled at manipulating wind-based Divine Power around his body to form a protective shield. His signature technique is the Frozen Wave of Divine Blue, also known as the Tengeki of Ice Shockwave, which fires a concentrated beam of ice capable of freezing targets solid. Although Kissu has not yet manifested a Saiga, which is a powerful magical weapon, narrative cues suggest that when he does, it will likely align with his water-based ultimate technique.
