Description
Kerberos, also known as Cerberus, is one of the two guardian beasts created by the powerful magician Clow Reed to protect the Clow Cards. He carries the title of the Beast of the Seal and was entrusted with the crucial duty of selecting the next master of the cards. For approximately thirty years, he slumbered within the Clow Book, which was kept in Osaka, a detail that explains his distinct Kansai dialect. When Sakura Kinomoto accidentally opens the book and scatters the cards, Kerberos awakens, appoints her as the new Cardcaptor, and bestows upon her the Sealing Wand to begin the recapture mission.
Kerberos spends most of his time in a borrowed form that resembles a small, winged, stuffed animal or plush toy with yellow-orange fur and large ears. In this diminutive state, his magical abilities are significantly weakened, limiting him primarily to flight and a diminished capacity for sensing magic. His true form is a dramatic contrast, manifesting as a massive, lion-like beast with a tawny mane-less body, enormous white angelic wings, and metal armor studded with a large red gem. In this powerful form, he commands the elements of fire and earth and can breathe powerful flames.
His personality is lively, cheerful, and often boastful, with a tendency toward narcissism and a love for loud, exciting situations. He is notably gluttonous, possessing an intense fondness for sweet foods, snacks, and video games, often spending his free time playing games in Sakura's room. Despite his bossy and demanding nature, he is remarkably intelligent and deeply knowledgeable about the Clow Cards and various forms of mysticism. Underneath his carefree exterior, he carries a profound sense of responsibility and deep caring, particularly for Sakura. He often hides serious concerns, such as the impending Final Judgment or Yue's weakening state, to protect her from worry and sadness, which he personally dislikes.
His most significant relationship is with Sakura, whom he sees not just as a master but as a good friend. He acts as her guide, mentor, and constant companion, often comforting her during difficult times. His relationship with his fellow guardian, Yue, is complex; they have known each other the longest and depend on one another, yet Kerberos sometimes harbors a petty jealousy, believing Clow Reed favored Yue. He often argues with Syaoran Li, who insults him by calling him a stuffed animal, but he nonetheless accepts Syaoran as an ally in protecting Sakura.
Throughout the series, Kerberos undergoes noticeable development, particularly in regaining his power. Initially confined to his plush form, he gradually recovers his abilities, such as breathing small fireballs after the Firey card is captured, and eventually gains the ability to freely transform into his true, powerful form. As the story progresses, he demonstrates a profound level of care and loyalty. During the Sakura Card arc, he deliberately conceals the truth that Yue is fading due to a lack of magical energy, bearing the burden of worry himself to spare Sakura from pain and self-blame. This action highlights his growth from a merely demanding guardian to a deeply compassionate protector who prioritizes his master's emotional well-being.
