Description
Hornet Sonia, later known as Scorpio Sonia, is a character from the anime Saint Seiya Omega. She is introduced as a high-ranking Martian soldier serving under her father, the war god Mars, and later becomes the Gold Saint of the Scorpio Temple. Her birth mother is a woman named Misha who died when Sonia was young, and her stepmother is the sorceress Medea. She is the older paternal half-sister of Eden, a bond that is central to her identity and actions.

As a child, Sonia was a cheerful and loving girl who lived a happy life in a wealthy family before a tragedy took her mother's life. Following this loss, her father Ludwig fully embraced his identity as the god Mars, and Sonia dedicated herself completely to his cause, burying her gentler nature beneath a fierce and loyal exterior. Her personality is defined by this internal conflict. On the surface, she is a cold, calculating, and lethal warrior who fights without mercy, believing firmly in her father's dream of destroying the old world to create a new one with Eden as its king. She is a strict commander and is often seen as manlike in her combat style, much like the Silver Saint Shaina. However, this harsh demeanor masks a deep well of trauma, loneliness, and a desperate need for her father's approval and love. Her most defining trait is her fierce, protective love for her younger brother Eden, whom she swore to protect when he was born. She acts as a shield to prevent him from having to bloody his own hands in battle. She also shows jealousy towards the maiden Aria, whom she sees as making Eden weak.

Sonia's primary motivation is to fulfill her father's will and secure Eden's future as the ruler of the new world. She seeks to prove her worth to her family, a quest that her stepmother Medea exploits for her own ends. Within the Martian army, Sonia is a commander of the Silver Saints and is entrusted with critical tasks, such as guarding the Fire Ruins, one of the elemental power sources. Her most significant and haunting mission is killing the Silver Saint Kazuma of the Southern Cross, the father of the future Lionet Saint, Souma. This act, ordered by Medea, leaves a deep psychological wound. She carries Kazuma's Cloth Stone as a grim trophy, but internally she is "very hurt" and hates what she has done, even as she grows colder with each kill.

Her key relationships drive the tragedy of her story. Her devotion to her father Mars is absolute, yet it is largely unreciprocated, and her stepmother Medea views her as a disposable tool to be used and discarded. Her relationship with her brother Eden is her sole source of warmth, though it is expressed through her desire to bear the burdens of war for him. Her nemesis is Souma, whose father she killed. Their rivalry is not just about revenge; through Souma, Sonia is confronted with the weight of her sins and offered a chance at a different path.

Sonia undergoes significant development late in the first season. To force Eden to commit to their father's cause, Medea manipulates Sonia into becoming a Gold Saint. She cuts her long pink hair, symbolically shedding her former self, and dons the Scorpio Gold Cloth. However, the sacred armor does not recognize her as its true master, indicating that she lacks the pure, righteous cosmos required of an Athena Saint. She is appointed as the guardian of the Scorpio Temple in the new Sanctuary created by Mars.

Her final confrontation takes place in the Scorpio Temple against Souma. In her desperation, she attempts to use the Scorpio's ultimate technique, the Antares Maelstrom. Because of her impure intentions and chaotic cosmos, the attack backfires, the Gold Cloth shatters, and she is consumed by her own power. In her dying moments, her cosmos briefly transforms the temple into a desert, and she confesses her deepest fear: being alone. As she dies, an act of compassion from Souma, who forgives her and holds her hand, finally grants her the peace she never found in life. Her brother Eden later arrives to mourn and bury her.

As a Hornet Martian, Sonia's notable abilities include the Hornet Stinger, where she fires energy needles from her arm; Twilight Marionette, which uses invisible threads to control shadowy spheres; and Turn Back the Darkness, a powerful dark energy wave that was her strongest technique as a Martian. After becoming the Scorpio Gold Saint, she gains access to the Crimson Needle, an upgraded version of her stinger, and the forbidden ultimate technique, Antares Maelstrom, a powerful whirlwind that proved to be her undoing. Her cosmos attributes are Fire and Darkness.
