Description
Chloé is a skilled assassin who appears as a central figure in the search for the true identity of Noir. She is a young woman with purple hair and slanted eyes, often seen wearing a battle cape, which gives her a distinctive and somewhat theatrical appearance. Unlike most other assassins in her world who rely on firearms, Chloé’s signature weapons are throwing daggers and hand-to-hand combat knives, though she also demonstrates an exceptional ability to use ordinary objects like gravel as lethal projectiles. Her combat prowess is such that she consistently overwhelms multiple enemies armed with guns, and she never suffers injury or capture throughout the story.

Chloé possesses a cold and calculating personality, showing no hesitation or remorse when killing targets ordered by Altena, the leader of the secret society Les Soldats. However, her coldness is not born of cruelty. She can be surprisingly considerate to her targets, as seen when she listens to General Dieter Lyman’s story before killing him and ensures his death is as painless as possible. She is generally quiet and shrewd but reveals different facets of her personality depending on whom she is with. In front of Altena, she appears innocent and childlike, like a daughter interacting with her mother. Around the amnesiac assassin Kirika Yuumura, for whom she harbors a deep crush, Chloé often shows a weaker, more mischievous, and even shy side. This dependency and obsession with both Altena and Kirika, however, points to a profoundly unbalanced mental state, a result of being raised and brainwashed by Altena from childhood to believe in the ideal of removing evil through violence.

Chloé’s primary motivation is her unwavering belief that she and Kirika are destined to become the true Noir, an ancient title held by two maidens who govern death. Her role in the story is that of a rival and a dark mirror to the protagonists, Mireille Bouquet and Kirika. It is revealed that as a child, Chloé watched from hiding as a young, brainwashed Kirika murdered Mireille’s family. Witnessing Kirika’s emotionless efficiency in killing sparked a powerful longing in Chloé, which later blossomed into romantic affection and an obsession with her fellow Noir candidate. She lives with Altena in a manor, where she trains for the Noir ceremony and initially finds joy in sparring with Kirika, believing their bond as Noir is inevitable.

The key relationship in Chloé’s life is with Kirika. Her devotion is absolute, and she sees Mireille as a rival who has stolen Kirika away. This culminates in a tragic confrontation when Kirika, remembering her past and choosing Mireille, rejects Chloé’s vision of their shared destiny. In a moment of heartbreak, Chloé tearfully asks Kirika Why not me? before attempting to kill Mireille. To protect her partner, Kirika is forced to stab Chloé with a fruit fork, an ironic twist as the fork was a gift Chloé had stolen from Mireille’s house and given to Kirika as a token of their bond. In her final moments, Chloé kisses Kirika, solidifying the tragic, obsessive romance that defined her character. Her death profoundly affects Kirika, who recognizes Chloé as another half of herself. Chloé’s character development is one of tragic realization; she moves from a place of absolute confidence in her shared future with Kirika to a desperate, violent heartbreak when that future is denied to her, ultimately leading to her death at the hands of the person she loves most. Her notable abilities are entirely melee-focused, making her an anomaly in a world of gunfighters. Her mastery of knives, exceptional agility, and tactical mind allow her to dominate in close-quarters combat, proving that blades can be far more deadly than bullets in the right hands.
