Description
Haruko Kamio is a central figure in the story, known for her striking appearance and complex, deeply layered personality. She is a young woman of twenty-eight with long, waist-length red hair and blue eyes, standing at 168 centimeters tall. Her outward demeanor is characterized by a loud, boisterous, and often drunken disposition, frequently speaking in a rough Kansai dialect that sets her apart from the more reserved nature of her foster daughter. Her nightly routine involves drinking heavily, often making the protagonist, Yukito Kunisaki, her reluctant drinking companion. Her driving is notoriously reckless; she rides a motorcycle and has a peculiar habit of parking it by crashing into the garage each night.

Despite this seemingly carefree and neglectful exterior, Haruko is driven by a profound and painful internal conflict. She is not the biological mother of Misuzu Kamio but rather her aunt. After Haruko's sister died shortly after giving birth, Misuzu was entrusted to her care. Haruko loves Misuzu deeply, but she lives in constant fear that Misuzu's biological father will one day reclaim custody of the child. To protect herself from the anticipated heartbreak of this separation, Haruko deliberately maintains an emotional distance, acting irresponsible and uninvolved in Misuzu's daily life, to the point of ignoring her birthday and leaving her alone most nights. This self-imposed isolation is her primary motivation, a defense mechanism to prevent herself from becoming too attached to a daughter she believes will eventually be taken away.

Her role in the story is that of a flawed guardian whose hidden love becomes the emotional anchor of the narrative's final act. Initially appearing as a minor, comic relief character due to her drunken antics, she undergoes the most significant transformation as the story progresses. When Misuzu's supernatural illness, connected to an ancient curse, worsens and she begins to lose her memories, Haruko's carefully constructed walls begin to crumble. She abandons her aloof persona and makes a desperate, heartfelt plea to Misuzu's paternal family, begging on her knees for the right to remain the girl's mother. Tragically, by the time she wins this right, Misuzu has lost her memory of who Haruko is, calling her "aunt" instead of "mother".

This crisis forces Haruko's final and most poignant development. She stops pretending and devotes herself entirely to caring for the ailing Misuzu, determined to be a real mother even if only for a short time. The culmination of her arc occurs when Misuzu's biological father arrives to take her away. As he carries her off, the memory-less Misuzu instinctively reaches out, crying out for her "mama" and runs back to Haruko. In this moment, Haruko finally abandons all pretense and embraces her daughter, openly weeping and solidifying their bond just before Misuzu's death. While she generally lacks supernatural powers, her most notable ability is her terrible driving skill, which is portrayed as a recurring, almost comical hazard. Her true strength lies in her capacity for deep, sacrificial love, which she hides behind a shield of alcohol and indifference until it is almost too late.
