Description
Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi is the science and technology officer assigned to the intelligence division aboard the space battleship Yamato. At twenty-seven years old, she hails from Kyoto and serves as a direct subordinate to Lieutenant Commander Shiro Sanada, the ship’s technical head. Her responsibilities encompass enemy tactical analysis, data assessment, and the operation of the Yamato’s wave motion gun, which she explains to the senior staff early in the voyage. She also holds a doctorate in psychology and fulfills the role of the ship’s counselor, offering emotional support to crew members when needed.

Niimi is described as a talented and capable officer whose confidence grows as her career progresses. She is not afraid to voice skepticism and often provides a logical, analytical perspective in discussions. Her friendly demeanor makes her approachable, and Sanada relies on her expertise and judgment. Despite her composed exterior, she harbors a deep conviction about humanity’s future. She comes to believe that the mission to Iscandar to retrieve the Cosmo Reverse System is too risky and that mankind would be better served by seeking an alternative planet for survival. This belief leads her to plot a mutiny during the voyage, a plan that ultimately fails.

Within the story, Niimi is a supporting character whose technical and psychological skills contribute to the Yamato’s operations. She serves on the second bridge during combat and provides tactical support. Her relationship with Sanada is one of professional trust, and she shares a thoughtful rapport with Tactical Officer Susumu Kodai, with whom she discusses personal matters such as his brother’s fate and the moral complexities of war. Her character development centers on a conflict between duty and her own assessment of the odds for Earth’s survival, culminating in a pivotal act of defiance that challenges the crew’s unity. Notable abilities include her expertise in intelligence analysis, her knowledge of the wave motion engine’s functions, and her psychological training, which she uses to counsel other crew members and to navigate tense interpersonal situations.
