Description
Haruka Shitow is a central figure in the narrative, introduced as a twenty-nine-year-old officer within the TERRA organization. Initially holding the rank of Major in the Intelligence Division, she is later promoted to Captain in the Tactical Division. Her professional role is directly tied to the story's inciting incident, as she is partially responsible for aiding the protagonist, Ayato Kamina, in escaping the sealed city known as Tokyo Jupiter.
The core of Haruka's character is her deep, complex personal connection to Ayato. The series gradually reveals that they knew each other long before the story begins; as teenagers, they fell in love. At that time, her family name was Mishima. When the Tokyo Jupiter barrier was established, Haruka was outside the city, leading to a twelve-year separation. Due to a time dilation effect within the barrier, Haruka aged naturally in the outside world while Ayato remained a teenager, creating a significant age gap that he initially does not understand. Furthermore, Ayato's memories of her were manipulated, causing him not to recognize her at first and to be haunted by fragmented visions of her, which appear in his artwork and in the form of a girl named Reika Mishima.
Haruka's personality is defined by a blend of professional competence and deep-seated emotional determination. She is a strong and capable operative who is nonetheless marked by the trauma of losing her home and the person she loved. This loss becomes a driving force in her life, motivating her work with TERRA as she seeks to reunite with Ayato. Her approach to this goal is characterized by selflessness and a willingness to go to great lengths for his sake. However, she also struggles in her personal relationships, particularly with Ayato, as her position within TERRA and the circumstances of his awakening cause him to mistrust her motives, suspecting she may only see him as a pilot for the giant mecha RahXephon. Despite her outer strength, she exhibits moments of vulnerability and sentimentality, particularly concerning her lost past.
Key relationships shape her journey significantly. Her enduring love for Ayato is the most important plot line of the series. She also had a relationship with a colleague, Itsuki Kisaragi, which is suggested to have been influenced by his similarity to the Ayato she remembers. Her family connections include her mother, who later remarried, resulting in the surname Shitow, and her younger sister, Megumi.
Throughout the story, Haruka develops from a woman driven by a seemingly lost love into a figure whose unwavering dedication plays a key role in shaping the world's fate. Her commitment helps Ayato rediscover his true memories and feelings. In the final sequence of the series, as a result of Ayato's actions, the past is altered so they are never separated, and an adult Ayato is seen with Haruka as his wife and the mother of their infant daughter, Quon. Beyond her personal resolve, she is a physically capable fighter, known for her proficiency in combat, including a "mean roundhouse [kick]".
