Description
Kaoru Niimi, an Earth Federation Cosmo Force officer from Kyoto, began her career in 2192 as Shiro Sanada's assistant at the National Space Defense Academy. There she cultivated expertise in physics and earned a doctorate in psychology. Concurrently, she entered a romantic relationship with Mamoru Kodai, ending in 2198 before his Operation M deployment. Facing Earth's devastation during the Garmillas-Earth War, Niimi joined the interstellar evacuation initiative, Project Izumo. When Izumo was canceled for the Yamato mission, she transferred to the space battleship Yamato, recruiting Mikage Kiryu for its science division. Skeptical of Yamato's viability, Niimi secretly backed General Kotetsu Serizawa's efforts to revive Project Izumo.
Aboard Yamato, Niimi served under Sanada in the science and technology division, specializing in tactical analysis, intelligence, and psychological counseling. Her technical contributions included explaining the wave motion gun's operation, co-developing a computer virus with Analyzer to counter Garmillas boarders, and defusing a Garmillas drill missile embedded in the wave motion gun during the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster. She also monitored and studied the Cosmo Reverse System en route from Iscandar. Trapped in a telepathic construct on Shambleau, she provided emotional support to Susumu Kodai.
Niimi's mission skepticism culminated in her leading a mutiny. After receiving orders from Serizawa, she attempted to persuade Admiral Okita and Sanada to abandon the mission, then manipulated navigator Daisuke Shima through flirtation to secure his support. Initially backing security chief Shinya Itou during the uprising, she intervened to save Shima when Itou threatened his life, sustaining a shoulder injury. Following the mutiny's failure, she was imprisoned but later reinstated after aiding in the Rainbow Star Cluster missile crisis. Captain Okita tacitly forgave her, permitting her return to duty.
Post-mutiny, Niimi exhibited increased modesty and professionalism. During the Gatlantis conflict, she contributed to constructing and operating the battleship Ginga. She survived a laboratory explosion triggered by a Gatlantean soldier's energy buildup, recovering fully to rejoin the crew. Six months post-war, she participated in a rescue mission for former Yamato crew members.
Characterized by confidence, analytical skepticism, and resilience, Niimi professionally dismissed Itou's sexual harassment. However, unresolved emotions for Mamoru Kodai led to an emotional breakdown upon learning of his death. Her experiences during the mutiny and reintegration refined her into a more circumspect yet dedicated officer.
