Description
Nanami Kirishima is the older sister of the protagonist Kaito Kirishima and a supporting character in Waiting in the Summer. Before the events of the story, she worked for an NPO in Matsumoto for several years. At the start of the series, she is assigned a long-term business trip to Bolivia, which creates the opportunity for the main plot to unfold. She is a tall young woman with long black hair, often tied with two hair beads, and she wears glasses. Her physical appearance is sometimes described as having a tan complexion.
Nanami’s personality is marked by a strong brother complex; she is deeply protective of Kaito and dotes on him constantly. She is highly emotional and cries very easily, whether from joy, worry, or sentimentality. Despite her tendency to be overly sentimental, she is also portrayed as intelligent, kind, and practical when needed. She takes good care of her home and her brother, and she is perceptive about the feelings of those around her.
Her primary motivation is her younger brother’s happiness. She wants Kaito to be loved and cared for, and she actively encourages his relationships. When she meets Ichika Takatsuki, she quickly misinterprets Ichika’s nervous behavior as a sign of being a foreign student in need of shelter. Sympathizing with Ichika’s vaguely explained situation, Nanami allows Ichika to move into the Kirishima home while she is away. She also shows awareness of Kanna Tanigawa’s long-standing crush on Kaito and openly supports that relationship, indicating her desire to see her brother settled with a good partner.
In the story, Nanami serves as the catalyst that enables Ichika to live with Kaito, which is essential to the romantic and science‑fiction elements of the series. Her absence in Bolivia for much of the narrative allows the main characters to develop their relationships without her constant oversight, though she remains a reassuring presence through phone calls and brief appearances. Her emotional and somewhat dramatic nature provides a contrast to the more reserved Kaito, and her tendency to misunderstand situations adds a layer of comedic tension. She is caring but also protective, warning Kaito not to do anything inappropriate while she is away.
Nanami’s key relationship is with Kaito; she is completely devoted to him and often expresses her affection openly. Her relationship with Ichika begins with a mixture of suspicion and sympathy but quickly becomes supportive. She also interacts briefly with Kaito’s friends, especially Kanna, whose feelings she acknowledges and encourages. Her character does not undergo significant development over the course of the series, as she is largely a static supporting figure who provides familial warmth and comic relief.
As for abilities, Nanami has no supernatural powers. Her notable traits are her emotional intelligence and her ability to read situations, though her interpretations are sometimes flawed by her own melodramatic tendencies. She is academically or professionally capable, given her work at an NPO and her ability to handle a business trip abroad. Overall, Nanami Kirishima is a doting, tearful, and well-meaning older sister whose choices set the stage for the central romance and alien encounter.
