Description
Marina Oki is the first officer and second-in-command of the Earth battleship Karyu in the anime Cosmowarrior Zero. She is a survivor of the planet Merasinya, an aquatic world whose oceans were dying. To escape extinction, the inhabitants were forced to accept mechanical bodies, and Marina became a humanoid—a being whose appearance is human but whose body is partially mechanical and fluid-based. This makes her fundamentally different from the standard machine men who lack such organic fluid components. Her secret nature is initially hidden; she is assigned to the Karyu by the chief mechanic to replace the robot Battleizer, but in truth she may have been placed there to monitor Captain Warrius Zero.

Marina’s official military record shows an exemplary career: she graduated from the Galactic Military Academy in year 256, served on the destroyer Munsuri, joined the general staff, became a defense officer on Jupiter, then requested a return to active fleet duty as a navigation officer on the Daisan. She was later promoted to captain and then executive officer on the cruiser Yu. After the Great Space War, she joined Earth Force Headquarters and was promoted to vessel captain. She declined a prestigious post as executive officer at headquarters in order to accept the same role aboard the Karyu, a decision that puzzled Warrius because it stalled her otherwise promising career.

Personality-wise, Marina is courageous, intelligent, and fiercely determined. She is also deeply compassionate and empathetic, often putting the needs of others before her own. She is introspective and initially guarded about her true nature, keeping her mechanical origins secret out of fear of rejection or mistrust. She values loyalty and fairness, and she is inspired by Warrius’s willingness to treat humans and humanoids equally, which stands in stark contrast to the prejudice she has encountered. This quality helps her overcome her own doubts about her worth.

Her motivations are shaped by her traumatic past as a refugee from a dying world and her desire to protect those around her. She is initially driven by duty and the need to prove herself, but as her relationship with Warrius deepens, her motivation shifts to protecting him and the crew, even at the cost of her own life.

In the story, Marina serves as Warrius Zero’s trusted executive officer and later becomes his love interest. Their relationship develops gradually: Warrius is initially disturbed by her resemblance to his deceased wife, but he comes to see her as an individual. After discovering her humanoid nature, he chooses to keep her secret, and his acceptance earns her gratitude and affection. Over time, they fall in love, and he reassures her that her mechanical body does not diminish her value as a person. Their first kiss occurs in episode 11, and Marina’s loyalty to him is so absolute that she refuses rescue by the King of Humanoids, preferring to stand with Warrius even in death.

Her key relationships include Warrius Zero, with whom she shares a profound romantic bond; the crew of the Karyu, whom she leads with competence and care; and the King of Humanoids, who represents the mechanized society she fled. She also has a historical connection to the figure Hell Maetel, who influenced her people’s decision to mechanize.

Marina’s development is marked by her journey from a secretive, duty-bound officer to a woman who accepts her identity and allows herself to love and be loved. She learns to trust others with her true self and to believe that a humanoid can be worthy of genuine human affection. Her arc highlights themes of transhumanism, identity, and the power of acceptance.

Notable abilities include her strategic mind and tactical skills as a high-ranking naval officer. Her fluid-based mechanical body gives her resilience and potentially unique physical capabilities, though these are not explicitly detailed in the series. She is also a survivor of planetary catastrophe, which lends her a quiet strength and wisdom.
