Description
Montague, in the context of the anime Romeo x Juliet, is the tyrannical ruler of Neo Verona and the father of Romeo. Fourteen years before the main story, he led a rebellion that overthrew the Capulet family, slaughtering nearly every member and seizing control of the floating continent. As the self-proclaimed Duke of Neo Verona, he governs with an iron fist, maintaining order through fear and military force. His personality is cold, authoritarian, and entirely lacking in empathy; he views dissent as treason and will crush any opposition without hesitation. His primary motivation is the preservation of his power and the continuation of the Montague dynasty, which he pursues through ruthless political maneuvering, including arranging a political marriage for his son Romeo with a noblewoman named Hermione. Montague's role in the story is that of the primary antagonist, standing as the direct obstacle to both Juliet’s quest for justice and Romeo’s personal happiness. His key relationships are defined by this tyranny: he regards his wife Portia with suspicion to the point that she flees the family, and he treats Romeo with cold disappointment when his son refuses to embrace the cruelty required to rule. Toward Juliet, he is the murderer of her family and the oppressor she must ultimately confront. Throughout the series, Montague shows little to no development or redemption; he remains entrenched in his despotic worldview until his final confrontation. His notable abilities lie not in personal combat but in political manipulation, command of the Carabinieri guard, and the authority of the ducal throne, which he uses to enforce his will across Neo Verona.
