Description
Doore is a secondary antagonist from the 1991 film Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge. He serves as a member of Cooler's Armored Squadron, an elite mercenary unit that operates under Cooler, the older brother of the galactic tyrant Frieza. Doore is a large, green-skinned humanoid alien with a muscular build, long black hair reminiscent of the Saiyan warrior Raditz, and purple undergarments. He wears the standard white and brown battle armor of his squadron along with a yellow scouter, though he notably does not wear any lower body armor.
Doore originally hailed from planet Coola No. 256, formerly known as planet Beppa. The continents of this world were surrounded by lava, which contributed to his development of an exceptionally tough and resilient body. Before joining Cooler's forces, Doore had a career as a wrestler in the Galactic Pro Wrestling League, where he remained undefeated for three hundred matches. Notably, he killed every single opponent he faced in the ring. This brutal background laid the foundation for his bloodthirsty and aggressive nature.
In terms of personality, Doore is characterized by extreme overconfidence and a cruel, sadistic streak. He derives pleasure from belittling and bullying those who are smaller or possess a lower power level than himself, as demonstrated when he threatened to crush the young Gohan's skull. His intelligence appears to be somewhat questionable; for instance, he had forgotten that the planet Namek had been destroyed and needed to be reminded of this fact by his comrade Neiz. Despite his arrogance, Doore can be driven to fear when confronted by an opponent significantly stronger than himself or faced with imminent death. He is, however, extremely loyal and respectful to his master, Cooler.
Doore's role in the story is that of an enforcer and hunter. He accompanies Cooler to Earth with the mission of finding and killing the Saiyan, Goku, who was responsible for defeating Frieza. When the Armored Squadron first encounters the Z-Fighters, Doore mistakenly grabs Gohan by the tail, believing the child to be Goku due to their similar appearance. He later participates in the initial assault against Goku, attempting to trap the Saiyan in a powerful bear hug so that his ally Neiz could land a kick. The plan backfires when Goku evades the attack, causing Neiz to accidentally kick Doore instead, which leads to a brief argument between the two comrades. After Cooler grievously wounds Goku, Doore joins the search to finish off the surviving members of the group. He ultimately meets his end at the hands of Piccolo, who kills him with a homing energy blast as Doore attempts to chase down Gohan.
Key relationships define Doore's place within the story. He operates as part of a trio alongside Salza, the captain of the squadron, and Neiz, another warrior. The three work together as a coherent, if occasionally bickering, team. Doore's primary loyalty lies with Cooler, whom he serves without question and often praises. His adversaries include Goku, Gohan, and eventually Piccolo, who proves to be his downfall. Stylistically, Doore shares many characteristics with Recoome of the Ginyu Force, including a similar large physique, overconfident attitude, and role as a brutish enforcer. Doore does not undergo significant character development, remaining a static antagonist whose main purpose is to demonstrate the threat posed by Cooler's forces before being eliminated.
Regarding his abilities, Doore is a formidable physical fighter. Guidebooks from Weekly Shōnen Jump have listed his power level at 185,000, which is notably higher than that of his leader, Salza. The Daizenshuu guidebooks also note that the Armored Squadron possesses power comparable to, or possibly greater than, Frieza's elite Ginyu Force. Doore can fly using ki and has incredible physical resilience, quickly recovering from a heavy kick delivered by Goku. His techniques include the Bear Hug, a torture hold that he used to restrain Goku, and the Can-Opener Attack, a move where he grabs an opponent's head in a vice-like grip and attempts to crush their skull. He possesses several named energy attacks, including the Thruster Kick, the Doray Pressure (also known as Dore Grenade in some video games), and his ultimate attack called the Dore Terrible Flash. In battle, he relies on his raw strength and tough body to overpower his enemies, though these traits ultimately prove insufficient against more skilled warriors like Piccolo.
