Description
Jean Kirschtein returns to his hometown, Trost District, in 849 for a 104th Cadet Corps training exercise. Though a local, he vehemently refuses to discuss his family or visit his mother, embarrassed by appearing overly attached. During a mock defense drill observed by Commander Dot Pyxis, Jean aggressively pursues Titan targets beyond his post to impress, but grows frustrated as cadets Mikasa, Connie, and Sasha repeatedly steal his targets. This sparks a confrontation where Jean insults Sasha and Connie, nearly escalating to violence before Reiner intervenes. Pyxis resolves the dispute by proposing a cook-off between Jean and Sasha, which Jean reluctantly accepts after provocation.
Determined to win and disprove the "mama's boy" label, Jean recruits Armin and Annie to hunt a legendary colossal boar in Trost's forests for its meat. Sasha's team locates and kills the boar first using her superior tracking, leaving Jean without his key ingredient. Later, Jean's mother visits the mess hall, causing him visible embarrassment. He tries to usher her away quietly but yells for her to leave when she acts maternally in front of peers, hurting her feelings. Eren suggests Jean show more respect. Desperate, Jean plans to steal meat from the superiors' storeroom. Armin panics and injures his legs fleeing, while Annie refuses due to the risk. Jean proceeds alone but is intercepted by a superior delivering a bag from his mother containing a homemade omelet.
Recalling memories of his mother's lifelong support, Jean abandons the theft and decides to cook the omelet. At the cook-off, Sasha presents an elaborate boar steak that impresses Pyxis with flavor. Jean counters with his simple omelet, causing initial bafflement. After tasting both, Pyxis declares Jean the winner, explaining Sasha over-relied on meat while Jean demonstrated skill with basic ingredients. Jean offers a conciliatory hand to Sasha, acknowledging mutual lessons learned, and they make peace. The experience softens Jean's attitude; he resolves to visit his mother after the competition. His mother is later shown awaiting his visit.
Throughout, Jean displays characteristic pragmatism, initial self-centeredness, competitive drive against peers, and blunt communication. His complex relationship with his mother reveals underlying familial loyalty beneath outward embarrassment, culminating in emotional growth when recognizing her support and choosing the omelet. His coordination with Armin and Annie during the hunt highlights developing leadership qualities, though initially driven by personal ambition.
