Description
"AFTERLOST" is a post-apocalyptic fantasy series set in a world devastated by a catastrophic event known as the "Collapse," which obliterated much of civilization. The story centers on Arata, a young man who awakens in the ruins of Tokyo with no memory of his past. He discovers that the city is now overrun by mysterious, monstrous creatures called "Shinjuu," which are drawn to a rare and powerful energy source known as "Shinjuu Cores." These cores are remnants of the Collapse and hold immense power, making them highly sought after by survivors and dangerous factions.

Arata encounters a girl named Yuki, who possesses a unique ability to manipulate Shinjuu Cores. Yuki is determined to uncover the truth behind the Collapse and the origins of the Shinjuu. Together, Arata and Yuki form an uneasy alliance, traveling through the desolate landscape in search of answers. Along the way, they encounter other survivors, each with their own motivations and secrets, including a group known as the "Seekers," who are hunting Shinjuu Cores for their own purposes.

As the story progresses, Arata begins to recover fragments of his memory, revealing a connection to the Collapse and the Shinjuu. Yuki's abilities also become a focal point, as her power to control Shinjuu Cores raises questions about her true nature and the potential consequences of her actions. The narrative explores themes of survival, identity, and the ethical dilemmas surrounding the use of power in a fractured world.

The series balances action and mystery, with the characters' journey intertwined with the larger mystery of the Collapse and the Shinjuu. The dynamic between Arata and Yuki evolves as they confront external threats and internal conflicts, driving the plot forward. The world-building emphasizes the bleakness of the post-apocalyptic setting while introducing elements of fantasy and science fiction, creating a unique backdrop for the unfolding story.

1Lost
A catastrophic event referred to as 'Lost' resulted in the disappearance of a city and its hundreds of thousands of inhabitants three years prior to the episode's start. Yuki, a teenage girl, is established as the sole known survivor of this disaster and has since been held in a heavily guarded laboratory, subjected to various tests by a shadowy organization known as the Agency. The courier Takuya is hired by a mysterious group to extract Yuki from the facility's custody. His motivation for accepting the job is professional, treating it as a delivery contract, prompted by a coded message recovered from the quarantined Lost area that appears to be from Yuki's father, who was believed to have perished. The extraction is successful but immediately triggers a violent pursuit by the Agency's armed forces, including helicopters. During the high-speed chase through the city on Takuya's moped, they are confronted by a supernatural, floating monk who attacks them with telekinetic energy. In response to this threat, Yuki unconsciously manifests a powerful ability, summoning the spirit of Akira, her father's former bodyguard who also vanished during the Lost incident. This spectral entity materializes an array of weapons to combat the monk, revealing Yuki's latent connection to the supernatural elements of the catastrophe. The battle demonstrates that the vanished individuals, referred to as 'Tama-Shi,' may exist in a new form and possess dangerous powers. The immediate consequence of Yuki's display of power is the escalation of the conflict, establishing her as a person of immense interest to various factions. The episode concludes with Takuya seemingly shot and killed by a new, mysterious young gunman, leaving Yuki's fate and her journey to the titular Lost city in immediate jeopardy.

3Memory
Yuki awakens in an unfamiliar underground facility and is greeted by Kyouji, who reveals the location to be a secret base situated beneath the city. Kyouji demonstrates a detailed knowledge of Yuki's past, disclosing that she is the daughter of a scientist who was involved with the Lost Number project. He explains that this project aimed to generate a new form of energy by harnessing the abilities of individuals designated as Lost Numbers, but an unspecified catastrophic event led to the disappearance of Yuki's father and the other subjects. As Yuki struggles to reconcile these revelations with her own fragmented memories, she reunites with Takuya, who continues his search for his missing sister. The pair decides to combine their efforts to locate the Lost Numbers and uncover the full truth behind the project's failure. Their investigation is complicated by a shadowy organization that is actively attempting to capture the Lost Numbers for its own undisclosed purposes. The group's journey leads them into a fabricated reality, a manifestation of a Tama-shi, which traps them within a constructed world based on the memories and attachments of those affected by the city's disappearance. Within this illusory space, the motivations of individuals lost to the cataclysm are explored through recurring loops centered on personal connections. The episode culminates in a pivotal moment when a Tama-shi in the form of Yuki's brother torments Takuya. This provocation triggers a powerful, uncontrolled outburst from Yuki, resulting in a massive explosion that carves a crater into the landscape. The event raises the immediate question of whether Yuki herself was the origin of the catastrophe that initially obliterated the city.
4Suspicion
Takuya is admitted to the intensive care unit, creating a tense atmosphere at the hospital as his condition remains uncertain. Yuki grapples with severe psychological trauma stemming from her role in injuring her younger brother, a development that shifts focus onto her fragile mental state. Unbeknownst to the main characters, multiple factions begin to mobilize, setting the stage for escalating conflict. A group of individuals emerges with the stated intention of helping the family and uncovering the truth behind the events that led to Takuya's hospitalization. Operating in opposition to this group, agents affiliated with the mysterious Agency work diligently to contain the situation and protect their hidden agenda. The episode establishes a clear divide between those seeking transparency and those determined to maintain secrecy. The motivations of the Agency personnel are driven by a need to control the narrative and prevent any exposure of their operations. In contrast, the helpers are motivated by a desire for justice and to support the affected family. The immediate consequence of these converging actions is a heightened state of suspicion and danger for Yuki and her family. The episode concludes with the distinct impression that the family is caught in the middle of a covert struggle, the full scope of which remains unknown to them.

6Parting Ways
The episode begins with Yuki receiving a package from her missing father, containing a letter and a cryptic key that becomes the central focus of their journey. Motivated by this communication, Yuki and Takuya decide to continue their search for both his sister, Yua, and the truth behind the catastrophic earthquake. Their path leads to a crossing where they must make a significant decision to separate from the group of survivors they have been traveling with. Takuya attempts to persuade the group to adopt a safer route, but the survivors refuse, choosing to stick to their original, perilous course. This forces Yuki and Takuya to proceed alone, carrying the emotional weight of leaving others behind. Their solo journey brings them into contact with a new faction of survivors led by a woman named Ami, who claims to be a scientist studying the quake's effects. Suspicion quickly arises between the duo and Ami's group, as Takuya and Yuki sense a hidden agenda beneath her scientific facade. Utilizing the key, they eventually locate and enter an underground bunker, where they uncover a shocking revelation regarding the earthquake's true origin. The immediate consequence of this discovery is a state of shock that forces them to quickly regroup and press onward. Concurrently, a cryptic message concerning Yua's whereabouts introduces a new, dangerous objective, as a hostile group is also revealed to be searching for her. The episode concludes with Yuki and Takuya confronting the accumulating consequences of their choices while facing their most difficult challenge yet.
7Regret
The narrative delves into Takuya's past as the group investigates a failed mission at the Light of Hope Academy for Disabled Children. This location serves as a focal point for the episode, drawing the characters into another displaced pocket of space. The primary objective for Takuya and his companions becomes the procurement of evidence that can be used to dismantle the organization known as Lacuna. Entering the academy forces a confrontation with the consequences of Takuya's previous operation there. The environment itself acts as a catalyst, surfacing memories and unresolved issues from that assignment. The episode structures its plot around the team's navigation of this unstable space while they search for incriminating materials. Their goal is directly tied to undermining Lacuna, establishing a clear procedural objective for the episode. The mission at the academy is not a new assignment but a return to an incomplete chapter, making the stakes personal for Takuya. This exploration of the past dictates the group's actions and the conflicts they face within the episode. The immediate consequence is the team's deepened entanglement with the mysteries surrounding the vanished city and the forces behind it. Their pursuit of evidence against Lacuna within this anomalous space propels the central investigation forward.
8Choice
Following the revelations at the abandoned orphanage, the group formulates a plan to expose Lacuna's illicit activities. Yoshiaki leverages his fame as a magician, announcing during a televised stage performance that he will make a random building disappear. The building targeted is, by design, the Lacuna Chemical Laboratory, serving as a diversion. Under cover of this spectacle, Takuya, Geek, and Yuki infiltrate the facility with the intent to broadcast evidence of the company's wrongdoing to the world. The infiltration team is shocked to discover the former director of the orphanage comfortably installed as the head of Lacuna, confirming a direct link between the human trafficking operation and the corporation. While the trio searches for proof, the police, seemingly alerted by the public stunt, take the true mastermind behind the operation in for questioning. The individual's serene and aware demeanor during the interrogation suggests the group's actions may have been anticipated as part of a larger trap. Concurrently, Sōma's condition, stable since his rooftop battle, deteriorates sharply and without explanation. He begins convulsing violently, unleashing uncontrolled energy beams from his body, creating chaos within his vicinity. The episode concludes with this sudden escalation of Sōma's crisis, which poses a new and immediate threat separate from the team's mission at Lacuna. The infiltration's success hangs in the balance as the evidence they seek and the trap that may await them converge.
9Fate
The ninth episode shifts focus to the past, detailing the origins of Project Noah. Following the selection process, only three volunteers—Daichi, Taiyo, and Tsuki—remain alive and are recruited for the project. Their shared objective is to participate in the initiative to save millions of people, establishing the foundation for their present-day motivations. As Daichi delves deeper into his research for the project, his path crosses with a woman named Miyuki. This encounter serves as a pivotal moment for Daichi, planting the first seeds of doubt regarding the true nature and purpose of the work he has committed to. The episode illustrates the formation of the core trio's bond and their initial dedication to a cause they believe is righteous. However, Daichi's subsequent questioning of his actions introduces a critical internal conflict. This divergence in perspective plants the narrative seeds for the ideological rift that will later emerge between him and the steadfast Taiyo. The episode functions primarily as an origin story, using the flashback structure to provide essential context for the characters' current allegiances and the high stakes of the central conflict surrounding the lost city.
10Decision
The episode returns focus to Yuki as she grapples with the emotional aftermath of her brother Souma's death in the previous episode. Simultaneously, the narrative reveals that Kota, Takuya's colleague who was stabbed in an earlier episode, has survived his injuries. Kota was rescued by Kaibara, the former head of the Lacuna Institute, who had been living in seclusion. Kaibara explains that his decision to abandon the orphanage case was driven by death threats, forcing him to disband his team to ensure their safety. This revelation reframes his earlier, seemingly antagonistic actions as protective measures. Eiji and Kikyo intervene to prevent Takuya and Yuki from proceeding to the vanished city of Lost, warning them of the true dangers that await there. They disclose that the Lost phenomenon generates a dementia-inducing wave effect that can be fatal, a critical piece of information withheld for the entirety of the series thus far. This disclosure casts the motivations of the scientists who have been guiding the protagonists into a more sinister light. Meanwhile, Taiyo advances his overarching plan, moving into the final stages of completing the portal connected to Lost. The episode culminates in a critical decision for Takuya and Yuki, who must choose whether to proceed toward the city despite the newly revealed lethal risks.
11Episode 11
12Future
Takuya and Yuki venture deeper into the Lost and discover Taiyō attempting to strangle a shadowy figure wearing glasses, who is revealed to be Yuki's father, Daichi. Daichi's consciousness has survived within the Lost as a parasitic data cluster, having sent the original message to lure Yuki to this location. He explains that Yuki was brought to the Lost because her unique genetic code, born from parents originating from different worlds, grants her the singular ability to decide humanity's fate. The narrative conflict centers on the choice Daichi presents to his daughter: she can either erase the Lost with a snap of her fingers, negating the cataclysm and all that followed, or she can allow it to remain. Yuki ultimately decides to preserve the Lost, choosing not to destroy the reality and connections that have emerged in its wake. Meanwhile, Taiyō succumbs to a fatal bullet fragment that had lodged in his heart much earlier, his body grotesquely transforming and firing energy beams before he finally perishes. Following Yuki's decision, she and Takuya exit the Lost, where Yuki is immediately recovered by Geek and the scientist faction. Takuya, however, vanishes along with his scooter, and Yuki inexplicably loses all memory of him, creating an ambiguous and unresolved conclusion to their partnership.
