Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth-generation descendant of the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon, carrying on his lineage as a modern samurai. In the world of Lupin III, he is a master swordsman whose life is defined by the way of the warrior, adhering to a strict code of honor and discipline that often sets him apart from the more unscrupulous members of Lupin's gang. His background is steeped in the traditions of feudal Japan, and he is a practitioner of several martial arts, including kenjutsu and iaido, skills he has honed since childhood.
Goemon is typically a man of few words, possessing a quiet and stoic demeanor. He spends much of his time in deep meditation, seemingly detached from the chaotic world around him. Despite his calm exterior, he has a profound sense of pride in his abilities. When he fails at a task or his sword is damaged, he experiences intense shame and remorse, often withdrawing to train or meditate to overcome his perceived weakness. While he usually maintains a serious composure, he can become easily annoyed by Lupin’s womanizing and foolish antics, and he is frequently the one to voice disapproval of a plan that conflicts with his personal morals. He also displays a dry, subtle sense of humor on occasion, often in reaction to the absurdity of his companions' actions.
In The Secret of Twilight Gemini, Goemon's primary motivation is not the pursuit of the Twilight Gemini treasure itself, but a personal mission of justice. He is hunting a villainous and highly trained assassin named Sadachiyo the Scorpion. Goemon and Sadachiyo share a past connection, having once trained together under the same samurai ideals. Sadachiyo, however, betrayed this code, using his skills for greed and ultimately turning against the very principles they both once held sacred. Goemon's role in the story is therefore driven by a need to confront this personal betrayal and eliminate a dishonorable threat. He does not actively participate in the treasure hunt from the beginning; instead, he arrives at a critical moment by coincidence, saving Lupin and his allies when they are in dire need of his combat prowess. His personal vendetta becomes the central conflict of the film's climax.
Goemon's key relationship in this story is his adversarial one with Sadachiyo. Their final confrontation is a duel to the death, pitting Goemon's legendary sword, the Zantetsuken, against Sadachiyo's equally formidable whip. This battle tests Goemon to his limits, as Sadachiyo proves to be a worthy and deadly opponent, even managing to break the tip of the Zantetsuken. Within the larger group, his role is that of the reserved but fiercely loyal ally. While he may become exasperated with Lupin, he does not hesitate to lend his unbelievable skills to a serious situation, especially when it aligns with a just cause.
Throughout the broader Lupin III series, Goemon shows little personal development, as he is already a highly refined master of his craft. The events of Twilight Gemini serve to reinforce his unwavering moral code. He does not waver in his mission to stop Sadachiyo, and his defining characteristic remains his absolute commitment to the samurai path. The film highlights that even when facing an opponent of equal skill, Goemon’s adherence to honor and his sheer will to win are what ultimately allow him to prevail.
Goemon’s most notable ability is his legendary swordsmanship, which he wields with superhuman speed and precision. He is capable of feats such as cutting a speeding bullet in half, deflecting a hail of gunfire, and slicing through solid steel as if it were paper using his ancestral blade, the Zantetsuken. The sword is virtually indestructible and can cut through almost any material, a property that Goemon often laments after using it to destroy "worthless objects" like helicopters or cars. In addition to his sword skills, he possesses extraordinary physical abilities, including extreme tolerance to cold, the ability to hold his breath for long periods underwater, and proficiency in unarmed combat. Despite his traditionalist image, he is also resourceful, capable of driving, piloting, and even using modern technology when the situation demands it, though his proficiency can vary.
