Description
Master Roshi, also known as the Turtle Hermit, is a legendary martial arts master who has lived for over three centuries. He resides on a secluded island at Kame House alongside his anthropomorphic turtle companion. His appearance is iconic: a bald, elderly man with a thick white mustache and beard, almost always wearing sunglasses and casual beach attire or a martial arts suit, and often carrying a wooden walking stick. In his younger days and during training, he wears a heavy turtle shell on his back.

Roshi's personality is defined by a striking duality. He is both a wise, disciplined sage dedicated to the philosophy of the Turtle School and a lecherous, eccentric old man whose comedic antics frequently involve pursuing women. Despite his flaws, he is deeply perceptive and values humility, self-improvement, and protecting the weak above raw power. His teaching philosophy emphasizes balanced living: work hard, study well, eat and sleep plenty. He believes martial arts are a path to personal growth rather than mere domination.

His motivations stem from a lifelong commitment to martial arts and a protective instinct for Earth. As a young student of the legendary Mutaito, he witnessed his master sacrifice himself using the Evil Containment Wave to seal the demon King Piccolo. This event shaped Roshi's sense of responsibility. He later trains several generations of fighters, including Grandpa Gohan, the Ox-King, Son Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha. During the original Dragon Ball series, he serves as the primary mentor and a benchmark for power, often testing his students by competing against them in disguise as Jackie Chun during World Martial Arts Tournaments. His goal was to prevent them from becoming arrogant by showing them there is always someone stronger.

In Dragon Ball Z Kai, Roshi steps back from direct combat as the threats become cosmic in scale. He transforms into a source of wisdom, moral support, and occasional comic relief, acknowledging that his raw power has been surpassed by the Saiyans and their allies. However, he remains a crucial figure, providing strategic advice and encouragement. His role in the story shifts from frontline warrior to elder statesman, yet his legacy endures through the techniques and values he instilled in his students.

Key relationships include his rivalry with the Crane Hermit, Tsuru-Sennin, and his deep bond with his students, especially Goku and Krillin. He also shares a long history with the Ox-King and Grandpa Gohan. His friendship with Bulma and her family, as well as his pet turtle, further ground him in the series' world.

Notable character development occurs when he returns to action in later arcs, such as the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super, where he proves that experience and technique can overcome superior physical strength. His performance there earns the respect of even divine beings.

Roshi possesses a vast array of abilities, most famously the Kamehameha, a powerful energy wave he spent fifty years perfecting. He can enter a Max Power state that dramatically increases his muscle mass and ki output, allowing feats such as destroying the moon. Other techniques include the Evil Containment Wave for sealing demons, the Thunder Shock Surprise which electrocutes opponents, and hypnosis. Despite his age, he retains superhuman strength, speed, and agility, along with centuries of combat instinct. His wisdom and strategic mind often prove as valuable as any energy attack.
