Joe Fria is an American actor, voice actor, director, and producer. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater from Carnegie Mellon University and began his professional acting career in 2002. Fria is based in Los Angeles, California, where he works extensively in both on-camera and voiceover performance, as well as directing dubs for major streaming platforms.
Within the anime voice acting industry, Fria is best known for his role as Makoto Hyuga in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. He provides the English voice for First Lieutenant Makoto Hyuga, one of the main computer technicians at NERV headquarters, in the Amazon Prime Video dub of these films. His work in the franchise includes the films Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (released in 2012) and Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (released in 2021). In addition to voicing the character, Fria also served as a director on Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
Beyond his anime roles, Fria has an extensive voiceover career, most notably as the voice of Slappy the Dummy for the Goosebumps SlappyWorld audiobook series published by Scholastic. He began voicing the character in 2017 with the first book in the series, Slappy Birthday to You, and has continued in that role for every subsequent installment. This makes him the voice actor who has portrayed Slappy across more projects than any other actor in the character's history.
Fria has also voiced roles in other animated series. He provides voices for multiple characters in Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, including D'Argencourt, Darkblade, Philippe, and Frozer. His live-action film appearances include roles in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and The Belko Experiment. Fria has also made television appearances on series such as Gilmore Girls, where he played two different characters including the waiter in Season 1 and coffee shop entrepreneur Joe Mastoni in Season 3.
