Movie
Description
Kensuke Aida is a classmate of Shinji Ikari at Tokyo-3 Municipal Middle School and is one of the "Other Children," a group of students who are potential Evangelion pilot candidates. Physically, Kensuke is a teenager with brown, messy hair, freckles, and red glasses. His birthday is September 12, 2001. Much of his family background is only lightly touched upon; his mother is deceased and his father works at a NERV base.

In Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Kensuke maintains the core personality traits that define his character. He is an energetic and outgoing military enthusiast, often called a "military otaku" due to his intense fascination with military hardware, survival tactics, and warfare. This obsession manifests in his hobbies, which include camping alone in the mountains around Tokyo-3 and engaging in simulated war re-enactments. He is rarely seen without his handheld camcorder, which he uses to record military vehicles, Evangelion units, and other points of interest. Unlike the more introverted Shinji, Kensuke is confident, talkative, and socially adept, easily striking up conversations and forming friendships.

A core motivation for Kensuke is his powerful, almost naive desire to become an Evangelion pilot. He views piloting an Eva as an incredible opportunity and fails to fully grasp the intense physical pain and psychological trauma that pilots like Shinji endure. He is shown to be somewhat oblivious to the suffering involved, focusing instead on the glory and excitement he associates with the role. In the film, his friendship with Shinji solidifies after Shinji saves his life during a battle with the Fifth Angel, an event that brings the two boys closer. Following this, Kensuke and his best friend, Toji Suzuhara, become supportive figures for Shinji, even encouraging him to fight the Sixth Angel by expressing their faith in him.

Kensuke's role in the story is primarily as a school friend and a representation of a more ordinary perspective on the extraordinary events. While the main pilots struggle with their burdens, Kensuke provides a contrasting viewpoint, treating the Evas with a sense of wonder and aspiration. His key relationships are with his two close friends, Toji Suzuhara and Shinji Ikari. The trio forms a common social unit at school, with Kensuke often serving as the excitable and knowledgeable one, particularly when it comes to anything related to NERV or military technology. He is also shown to have a crush on Misato Katsuragi, similar to Toji.

As a developmentally static character in this first film, Kensuke does not undergo a significant personal transformation. He begins and ends as a military-obsessed, friendly boy who dreams of piloting an Evangelion. The narrative uses him to highlight the difference between an outsider's idealized perception of being a pilot and the much harsher reality faced by Shinji. In terms of notable abilities, Kensuke possesses no special combat or piloting skills within the context of the film. His primary talents are his extensive, self-taught knowledge of military and NERV equipment, his resourcefulness in survival situations, and his social acumen in making friends.
