Greg Ayres
Description
Greg Ayres is an American voice actor with a career spanning over two decades in the English-language dubbing of Japanese anime. Born on December 7, 1968, in Richmond, Virginia, he began his professional voice acting career in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Before entering the industry, Ayres was an avid anime fan and also worked as a nightclub DJ, a pursuit he continues alongside his voice acting work.
Ayres's entry into voice acting occurred in Houston, Texas, a major hub for anime localization at the time, where he began working with ADV Films. His early career involved landing roles through auditions and networking within the local community. Over the years, his studio affiliations have evolved, leading to work with Funimation (now Crunchyroll) and Sentai Filmworks, reflecting the broader consolidation of the English dubbing market. He is known for his distinctive, high-pitched vocal range, which often leads to him being cast in roles of young, energetic, or comedic characters.
Ayres has an extensive filmography with hundreds of credits. Among his most prominent and enduring roles are Kaoru Hitachiin in Ouran High School Host Club, the passionate libero Yu Nishinoya in Haikyu!!, and the gentle Koji Koda in My Hero Academia. He is also recognized for voicing the villainous bear Monokuma in the Danganronpa series and the antagonist Frost in Dragon Ball Super.
The extensive list of roles provided includes many of his performances across various series and films. He voices the lead character Son Goku in the long-running Saiyuki franchise, including Saiyuki Reload -ZEROIN-. In sports and action series, he is Nagisa Hazuki in Free! -Dive to the Future-, Jiro Hitoyoshi in Concrete Revolutio, and Takeru Aizawa in Squid Girl. His comedic and slice-of-life roles include Makoto Isshiki in the Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! series, Kouta Tsuchiya in Baka and Test, and Tomoki Sakurai in Heaven's Lost Property. He has also played historical and fantasy characters such as Heisuke Todo in the Hakuoki series and Rygart Arrow in Broken Blade. His work in film includes roles in One Piece Stampede (as both Cabaji and Sentomaru), My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising, and the award-winning film Colorful. He also provided the voice for Sho Utsumi in the series SSSS.Gridman.
Throughout his career, Ayres has been recognized for his performances, winning a BTVA Anime Dub Award in 2014 for Best Male Lead Vocal Performance in an Anime Feature Film/Special for his work in Heaven's Lost Property the Movie: The Angeloid of Clockwork. Beyond acting, he is a familiar figure at anime conventions across the United States, where he often appears as a guest, hosts panels, and works as a DJ. His brother, Christopher Ayres, was also a prominent voice actor and director until his passing in 2021. Greg Ayres's career is marked by his longevity, versatility, and deep connection to the anime community, evolving from a dedicated fan into one of the industry's most prolific voice actors.
