Description
"Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid" is the third installment in the "Full Metal Panic!" series, continuing the story of Sousuke Sagara, a skilled soldier from the covert anti-terrorist organization Mithril, and Kaname Chidori, a high school girl who possesses latent abilities tied to a mysterious phenomenon known as "Whispered." The series is set in a world where advanced military technology, particularly Arm Slaves (AS), plays a central role in global conflicts.
The narrative begins with Sousuke and Kaname resuming their daily lives after the events of the previous series. Sousuke, still tasked with protecting Kaname, struggles to balance his military duties with his civilian life, often leading to comedic and tense situations. However, the peace is short-lived as Mithril faces a new threat from a rogue faction within the organization, led by the enigmatic Gauron, who has returned with a vendetta against Sousuke. Gauron's actions escalate into a full-scale conflict, forcing Mithril to confront internal betrayal and external enemies.
As the story progresses, Sousuke is forced to confront his own identity and the moral complexities of his role as a soldier. His relationship with Kaname deepens, revealing her growing frustration with the constant danger and Sousuke's inability to fully understand her feelings. The series explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the psychological toll of warfare, particularly through Sousuke's internal struggles and Kaname's emotional turmoil.
The plot intensifies with the introduction of new characters, including Leonard Testarossa, a powerful and manipulative figure connected to the Whispered, and his sister Tessa, who commands Mithril's submarine, the Tuatha de Danaan. Leonard's involvement brings a new layer of intrigue, as his motives and connection to Kaname remain ambiguous. The series culminates in a high-stakes battle where Sousuke must confront Gauron once more, leading to a climactic showdown that tests his resolve and loyalty to both Mithril and Kaname.
"Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid" maintains a balance between intense mecha action and character-driven drama, delving deeper into the psychological and emotional struggles of its protagonists. The series builds on the established lore of the "Full Metal Panic!" universe, expanding on the mysteries of the Whispered and the geopolitical tensions that drive the conflict. Through its intricate plot and well-developed characters, the series offers a compelling continuation of the overarching narrative, blending action, suspense, and emotional depth.

2The Scene Below the Water
Sousuke Sagara and his classmate Shinji Kazama search for the person posting embarrassing photographs of Kaname Chidori on the internet. Their investigation proceeds independently from Mithril's military operations. Meanwhile, the terrorist organization Amalgam sends a team led by Gates to collect payment from the Balic militia. Gates arrives by helicopter over the ruined city of Taboli. He analyzes the battlefield debris and identifies the presence of Mithril's M9 units and a Lambda Driver-equipped Arm Slave. Gates pushes one of his own subordinates, Doz, out of the helicopter for questioning his conclusions. He then meets Colonel Marius of the Balic forces at a deserted baseball field. After Marius complains about the quality of the purchased weapons, Gates shoots him in the head. Gates orders his squad to execute all of Marius's men while he sings Ave Maria. One subordinate questions Gates's decision to kill their clients, so Gates shoots that man as well. Gates then pistol-whips Xia Yu Lan, a young operative, when she calls him an idiot. The episode closes with Gates withdrawing via helicopter, expressing boredom and a need to defecate. The investigation into Kaname's online harassment remains unresolved, and Gates's interest in the Lambda Driver signals future confrontations with Sousuke and Mithril.
3Labyrinth and Dragon
Kaname Chidori watches a samurai drama in the school clubroom when a news bulletin interrupts the broadcast. The report announces that armed militants have kidnapped peace delegations from Northern and Southern China in Nanjing. Amalgam operatives under the command of Gates seize the hostages and fortify themselves inside an underground tunnel system beneath the Yangtze River. Mithril conducts a strategy meeting led by Lieutenant Commander Andrei Kalinin. The plan sends infantry and three Arm Slave units into the labyrinthine tunnel to extract the captives. Sousuke Sagara requests to pilot an M9 instead of the Arbalest and asks about Kaname's protection detail. Kalinin denies both requests, citing insufficient justification and jurisdictional issues. Intelligence Captain Vincent Bruno joins the operation to relay communications back to the submarine Tuatha de Danaan. The rescue team advances without encountering significant resistance. Kurz Weber examines an enemy Arm Slave and discovers it operates as an unmanned drone. Mao's team reaches the room holding the hostages. Xia Yu Lan, disguised as one of the captives, kills multiple rescue team members in close combat. Bruno severs all external communications, revealing his allegiance to Amalgam. A red Arm Slave, the Venom, appears before Sousuke's Arbalest while a Shadow unit blocks Kurz. Mithril's forces remain trapped inside the tunnel with no contact to their command.
4Daylight
Mithril rescue teams walk into multiple enemy ambushes during an underground operation. A young female operative, disguised among the hostages, kills three Mithril soldiers before engaging the lone survivor. Enemy Arm Slaves simultaneously ambush Sousuke Sagara and his unit from concealed positions. Mithril commanders realize the enemy intercepts all their communications and anticipates every move. Captain Teletha Testarossa and Commander Andrei Kalinin conclude a intelligence leak compromises the entire mission. Testarossa issues a set of false orders that reverse all previous tactical directives. The deception causes enemy forces to reposition into Mithril kill zones. Sousuke engages an enemy Venom equipped with a Lambda Driver but cannot activate his own unit's Lambda Driver. The Venom pilot, under the influence of performance-enhancing drugs, shrugs off sustained fire from multiple Mithril Arm Slaves. The enemy Venom's battery depletes mid-battle, forcing the pilot to retreat before destroying Sousuke's unit. Mithril forces extract from the combat zone with their casualties, but the enemy escapes with operational intelligence and a functional Lambda Driver.
6Edge of Heaven
Mithril dedicates resources to gathering intelligence on the secret organization Amalgam. Sousuke Sagara continues his assignment protecting Kaname Chidori at her high school in Tokyo. Kaname notices changes in Sousuke's behavior and attempts to offer him support. Sousuke struggles with self-doubt regarding his fitness as Kaname's protector. In a quiet moment,Kaname gives Sousuke a haircut in her apartment. During the haircut, Sousuke relaxes completely and falls asleep, demonstrating the deep trust he places in Kaname. Mithril leadership reassigns Sousuke's bodyguard duties to another agent. The organization explicitly forbids Sousuke from further contact with Kaname. The separation order conflicts directly with Sousuke's personal sense of duty and his growing attachment to Kaname. Mithril's pursuit of intelligence on Amalgam forces a choice between operational security and personal bonds. Sousuke must decide whether to obey the direct command or find a way to remain close to Kaname.
7Left Behind
Mithril orders Sousuke Sagara to cease his protection detail over Kaname Chidori in Tokyo. The organization assigns a new operative, codenamed Wraith, to replace him as her guardian. Sousuke protests the decision and questions Wraith's competence during a tense rooftop confrontation. Wraith counters by citing Sousuke's repeated failures to blend into civilian life and his tendency to attract danger. Unable to overturn a direct command, Sousuke packs his belongings and vacates his apartment without informing Kaname. The next morning, Kaname arrives at school and notices Sousuke's empty seat for several consecutive days. During her commute, she has a chance encounter with Xia Yu Lan, an agent from the terrorist organization Amalgam. Kaname senses immediate danger but does not understand why. She attempts to contact Sousuke and later visits his apartment to check on him. She finds the unit completely empty with no sign of where he went. The episode ends with Kaname standing alone in the abandoned room while enemy agents begin closing in on her location, unaware that her protector has already left.
8Jungle Groove
Sousuke Sagara returns to the Mithril base on Merida Island after his recall from protection duty in Tokyo. Captain Teletha Testarossa confronts him in her office, accusing him of emotional attachment to Kaname Chidori and neglect of his responsibilities as the Arbalest pilot. Sousuke remains silent and fails to offer any explanation, which provokes Tessa into a tearful outburst as she declares her hatred for him. Lieutenant Belfangan Clouseau, the Arm Slave pilot who intervened in the Sicily operation, arrives at the base as the new commander of the Special Response Team. At the base bar, Clouseau sits in the seat of the deceased former commander and dismissively criticizes the fallen soldiers. Kurz Weber throws a punch at Clouseau, but the lieutenant dodges and counters, knocking Kurz to the floor. Clouseau then calls Sousuke a coward and challenges him to an Arm Slave duel to settle the matter of honor. During the duel, Clouseau pilots an M9 while Sousuke uses the Arbalest, and Clouseau systematically dismantles the Arbalest, leaving Sousuke unconscious. In the base hospital, Clouseau explains that Sousuke lost because he resents the Arbalest and refuses to accept it as his machine. Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, the twin assassin Yu Lan calls her sister Yu Fan to report that she has located Kaname and that she can kill her. The sisters prepare to execute their plan against their target, setting Kaname in immediate danger far from any protection.
9Her Problem
Kaname Chidori struggles with Sousuke Sagara's sudden absence and her growing sense of isolation. She receives Sousuke's withdrawal letter from the school, confirming he has left without explanation. Determined to confront whoever has been surveilling her, Kaname arranges a meeting with Mithril intelligence agent Wraith in a hotel room. Wraith admits to monitoring Kaname but reveals another party is also tracking her. Before Wraith can provide more answers, assassin Xia Yu Lan ambushes them and shoots Wraith. Kaname evades Yu Lan through quick thinking and improvised tactics, using her surroundings to escape. Leonard Testarossa, Tessa's brother and an Amalgam operative, arrives with a miniature Arm Slave and kills Yu Lan. Leonard explains that Yu Lan acted as a rogue agent outside Amalgam's interests. He then forcibly kisses Kaname, and she slaps him in response. Left alone after Leonard departs, Kaname breaks down crying over Sousuke's absence and her helplessness. The episode closes with Kaname realizing she must face escalating threats without Sousuke's protection.

The rogue Arm Slave destroys city neighborhoods and vanishes into the rubble, raising the threat of civil war. Mithril dispatches a reconnaissance team of East Asian personnel, including Sousuke Sagara and Melissa Mao, to locate the stolen machine. Before the briefing, Sousuke climbs into the Arbalest in the hangar and converses with its AI, Al, attempting to grasp Lambda Driver operation. Sousuke's preoccupation with Kaname Chidori nearly compromises the team's mission. Melissa Mao delivers a harsh critique to Sousuke, touching a raw nerve over his emotional distractions. Gauron survives and vows to continue hunting Sousuke.
12The Burning One Man Force
Gauron holds Kaname Chidori inside the cockpit of his Venom Arm Slave. Sousuke Sagara pilots the ARX-7 Arbalest alone to rescue her. The two Arm Slaves clash in the ruins of a city. Gauron activates the Lambda Driver to deflect the Arbalest's rifle rounds and generate explosive shockwaves. Sousuke disables the Venom's left arm and leg with two point-blank shots. The Arbalest's own Lambda Driver malfunctions repeatedly, forcing Sousuke to rely on manual control. He rams the Arbalest into the Venom's torso, locking both machines together. The Venom's cockpit hatch opens, and Gauron throws Kaname out into the air. Sousuke ejects from the Arbalest's cockpit and drops onto the Venom's chest. He stabs Gauron through the chest with a combat knife. Gauron dies with a smile. The Arbalest explodes behind Sousuke as he catches Kaname mid-fall.
