Description
Andrei Sergeivich Kalinin is a senior officer in the anti-terrorist private military organization Mithril, holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander and serving as the Operations Director for the Western Pacific Squadron. He is the direct commanding officer of Sergeant Sousuke Sagara and acts as his official foster father and primary guardian. Born in Russia, Kalinin was a former officer of the Soviet Union’s KGB and a distinguished member of the Spetsnaz special forces. While leading a team that discovered a crashed Japanese airliner, he found a single survivor: a three-year-old boy named Sousuke Sagara. Years later, during the Soviet-Afghan war, Kalinin encountered the boy again as a child soldier fighting against Soviet forces. After capturing Sousuke, disillusioned by his country’s use of children in war and following the death of his wife and unborn child due to poor medical care, Kalinin defected. He and Sousuke fought together against the mercenary Gauron before parting ways and later reuniting within Mithril. Kalinin is the epitome of a stoic and professional career soldier, almost always calm and composed, maintaining a cool-headed demeanor even in dire circumstances. This discipline masks a deep if reserved sense of humanity, particularly in his relationship with Sousuke, whom he views as a son. He has a sentimental side, spending free time trying to perfectly recreate a borscht recipe that his late wife used to make, though the dish is notoriously unpalatable to everyone except himself. He gave Sousuke his Japanese name and taught him to read and write the language. Kalinin acts as a key military strategist for Captain Teletha Testarossa, valued for his experience and sound tactics. His callsign is Perth 1. A highly formidable soldier and strategist, he possesses expert-level skills in special operations, intelligence, and combat, and Sousuke has stated he could never defeat Kalinin in combat. Eventually, Kalinin betrays Mithril to join the secret organization Amalgam, becoming a subordinate of Leonard Testarossa under the codename Mr. K, motivated by disillusionment and belief in Leonard’s vision for global change. This decision leads to a final, tragic confrontation with Sousuke, resulting in his death. In comedic spin-off stories, his role is primarily as a supervising authority figure, monitoring Sousuke’s attempts to protect Kaname Chidori in a high school setting, with a running gag about his inedible borscht.
