Alfredo Rollo

Description
Alfredo Rollo is a Brazilian voice actor, dubbing director, and psychologist, widely recognized for his iconic portrayals of characters in some of the most popular anime franchises in Brazil. Born in São Paulo on July 10, 1969, he began his career in theater before transitioning to voice acting in 1993 after passing a test at the now-defunct Megassom studio. His early work included smaller roles in anime such as Captain Tsubasa, Dragon Ball, and Sailor Moon.

Rollo's career is marked by two signature roles that have defined his legacy in Brazilian dubbing. He originally auditioned for the role of Goku in Dragon Ball Z but was instead cast as the iconic Saiyan prince, Vegeta. This role became a massive success, with his performance resonating deeply with fans and his delivery of certain lines, such as the famous "more than eight thousand," becoming enduring memes in Brazilian pop culture. He would go on to reprise the role of Vegeta in numerous films, including Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Similarly, for Pokémon, he auditioned for the character James but was ultimately chosen to voice the Brock, a role he performed across many films and series, including Pokémon: Jirachi Wish Maker, Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life, and throughout the Diamond & Pearl series. A notable exception to his long run as Vegeta was for the series Dragon Ball Kai, from which he and other members of the regular cast were absent due to disagreements with the dubbing studio chosen for that production.

Beyond these hallmark roles, Rollo has lent his voice to a wide array of characters in anime. His filmography includes Uryuu Ishida in Bleach, Poseidon in Knights of the Zodiac, Gourry Gabriev in Slayers, Zechs Merquise in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, and Makoto Hyuga in the Evangelion rebuild films. He also voiced characters in projects such as Tiger & Bunny 2, Inazuma Eleven, Captain Tsubasa: Road to 2002, and the film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. In addition to anime, he is the official Brazilian Portuguese voice for numerous Hollywood actors, including Ben Affleck, Mark Wahlberg, Keanu Reeves, Jack Black, Heath Ledger, and John Travolta. He has also worked in original animation, voicing characters in the Brazilian animated series Irmão do Jorel and Oswaldo.

In parallel with his on-screen work, Alfredo Rollo has had a significant career as a dubbing director. He made his directorial debut with the Pokémon series and has since directed Portuguese versions for a vast range of productions, working with studios for major clients like Disney, Nickelodeon, Fox, Warner Bros., and Sony. His directing credits include the television series Dr. House and films such as Bicentennial Man, Boyhood, and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. His contributions to the field have been recognized with multiple nominations for the Prêmio Yamato, the main dubbing award in Brazil, for categories including Best Supporting Voice Actor and Best Dubbing Direction.

Rollo is also a licensed psychologist and an advocate for veganism. In 2017, he joined with fellow vegan voice actors to create the YouTube channel Fala Vegan, which dubs videos related to the subject. He currently resides in Portugal, a move that initially led him to believe his dubbing career might end. However, the industry's adaptation to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed him to continue recording for Brazilian productions from his home in Europe.
