Description
Kurz Weber is a sergeant in the mercenary organization Mithril, serving aboard the submarine Tuatha de Danaan with the callsign Uruz 6 and identification number B-3127. He is a member of the Special Response Team, operating as both an Arm Slave pilot and the unit’s designated marksman. He is most often deployed in a three-person cell alongside Melissa Mao and Sousuke Sagara.

His background begins in Japan, where he was born to West German parents and grew up in the Edogawa ward of Tokyo. His father worked as a journalistic liaison. A Lebanese terrorist bombing at an airport killed his parents when he was still a middle school student, abruptly ending a normal childhood. In the aftermath he became a mercenary, where a natural talent for sharpshooting emerged. He was trained by a cold and calculating sniper known as Casper. That mentorship ended when Casper severely wounded an innocent girl to eliminate a target, a decision Kurz found unconscionable. He parted ways with Casper, and to this day he continues to pay the medical expenses of that girl, who remains in a coma. The guilt drives him to at least apologize to her if she ever wakes. Kurz and Sousuke unknowingly fought on opposite sides of a battle in Lebanon years earlier, each regarding the other as one of the most formidable opponents they had ever encountered; only Melissa Mao is aware of this shared history.

His personality is a study in contrast. Outwardly he is outgoing, flirtatious, and relentlessly playful, often using vulgar or flippant language and pursuing women with unapologetic directness. This regularly puts him at odds with Mao, who endures his unwelcome advances with a mixture of irritation and long-suffering tolerance. He acts as Sousuke’s polar opposite: cheerfully irreverent where Sousuke is rigid and militaristic. Yet beneath the comedic surface, Kurz is a serious and fiercely reliable professional. When a mission begins he drops the levity and becomes a focused, aggressive combatant. He is also considered a finicky genius, giving the mechanics unusually detailed and difficult-to-decipher feedback about his equipment.

His primary motivation is rooted in atonement for the innocent girl harmed during his time with Casper; much of his income goes toward her care. Within Mithril, he is driven by loyalty to his squad and a genuine desire to protect the people around him, including Kaname Chidori, whom he and his team are assigned to guard.

In the story, Kurz takes part in the protection detail in Tokyo and participates in critical operations. He demonstrates his phenomenal marksmanship by successfully hitting the open gun port of a Behemoth’s 30mm cannon from the back of a moving truck. When Gauron hijacks the Tuatha de Danaan, Kurz assists Sousuke in subduing two SRT defectors, though his hand-to-hand combat is bluntly assessed by Mao as being worse than that of a city punk. Later source material shows him attaining the rank of Sergeant Major and operating under the alias Kalius during a snatch mission.

Key relationships define his role in the squad. He is Sousuke’s best friend, the comedic foil who helps humanize the stoic soldier. With Melissa Mao, the dynamic is one of teasing and sexual harassment on his part and exasperation on hers, but each trusts the other’s skill implicitly. Toward Captain Teletha Testarossa he shows respect and loyalty. With Kaname Chidori he is lighter in his teasing, often offering wry commentary on her relationship with Sousuke.

His notable abilities include an almost preternatural talent with sniper rifles and Arm Slave long-range cannons. He can visualize a bullet’s exact trajectory, achieving inhuman accuracy even under adverse conditions. He pilots an M9 Gernsback, the standard issue Arm Slave for the Special Response Team. Kurz is fluent in Japanese, English, and German, and before becoming a soldier he aspired to be a professional blues singer, a background that left him with a solid singing voice and skill on the guitar.
