TV-Series
Description
Chew is a fish-man of the smelt-whiting variety who serves as an officer in the Arlong Pirates, having previously been a member of the Sun Pirates. His appearance is notable for his muscular build, blue skin, thick lips, and the Arlong Pirates tattoo on his right shoulder. Standing at a height of two hundred fifty-seven centimeters, he often wears a striped blue vest, dark brown pants, and a necklace.
Among the members of the Arlong crew, Chew is regarded as one of the more cool-headed and composed individuals, maintaining a stern and sinister demeanor even when carrying out cruel acts. Unlike some of his more volatile comrades, he rarely loses his temper and follows orders without hesitation or visible emotion. He possesses a speech habit of punctuating his sentences with the sound chu, which adds to his distinctive character. Despite his calm exterior, he shares the deep-seated fish-man supremacist ideology of his captain, Arlong, viewing humans as an inferior species. This arrogance leads him to underestimate his opponents, a flaw that ultimately contributes to his downfall.
Chew is exclusively loyal to Arlong and the interests of his crew, showing no remorse for killing innocent humans. His motivations are centered on maintaining the dominance of the Arlong Pirates over the human population of the Conomi Islands. He participated in the initial takeover of Cocoyasi Village and played a key role in enforcing Arlong's rule, including eliminating a contingent of Marines from the Seventy Seventh Branch alongside his crewmates Hatchan and Kuroobi.
During the Arlong Park Arc, Chew serves as a direct antagonist to Usopp. When the Straw Hat Pirates arrive to challenge the Arlong Pirates, Chew pursues Usopp into the forest. The battle highlights Chew's overconfidence, as he dismisses Usopp as a weak opponent. However, Usopp uses clever tactics and his own inventions to wear Chew down, eventually setting him on fire with alcohol and a flaming projectile before defeating him with repeated blows to the head. Following his defeat, Chew is arrested by the Marines.
Chew's abilities are derived from his fish-man physiology, which grants him physical strength at least ten times that of an average human. His primary combat technique involves spitting water from his mouth with tremendous force and speed. His Mizudeppo, or Water Gun, fires a concentrated shot that strikes like a pistol bullet, and he can unleash a rapid barrage known as the Hyappatsu Mizudeppo to suppress opponents. His most powerful attack is the Mizu Taiho, or Water Cannon, for which he sucks in a large volume of water to inflate his body like a balloon before expelling it all at once in an explosive blast. During his time with the Sun Pirates, he was also seen wielding a pair of katana. Despite his considerable power, his arrogance and the unconventional tactics of his opponent lead to his defeat, marking him as the first adversary whom Usopp defeats single-handedly.
