Kyuzo is a tall, pale-skinned young man with thick blond hair and a distinctive crimson-red uniform worn over black clothing and boots. He is a highly skilled samurai who wields dual blades that fit into a single sheath carried on his back, and his swordsmanship is considered to be on par with or even greater than that of the legendary warrior Kambei Shimada. Before joining the group of seven samurai, Kyuzo worked as a bodyguard for a wealthy merchant named Ayamaro. His background is largely mysterious, and he rarely speaks about his past, but his actions define him as a nearly silent, stoic, and intensely focused individual.

Kyuzo is driven by a deep commitment to mastering his swordsmanship and a strong personal sense of honor. His primary motivation for joining the seven samurai is to test his skills against Kambei, whom he wishes to challenge to a duel to the death after the bandits are defeated. Within the story, Kyuzo is one of the seven samurai recruited to defend a village from bandit attacks.
