Description
Gaudi Gabriev is the Spanish-language name for the character known in the original Japanese version as Gourry Gabriev, who appears as a primary character in the anime The Slayers Next. He is a tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed young man who serves as the traveling companion and self-appointed bodyguard to the sorceress Lina Inverse.

Gaudi hails from a family that has passed down a legendary weapon known as the Sword of Light for generations. Disputes within his family over who would inherit this blade caused significant conflict. To put an end to the fighting, a seventeen-year-old Gaudi took the Sword of Light and fled his home, subsequently becoming a wandering mercenary. While traveling, he once nearly threw the sword away in frustration, but a fisherman convinced him to keep it and use it for a worthy purpose. By chance, this fisherman was later revealed to be Lina Inverse's father, though neither Gaudi nor Lina are aware of this connection at the time they meet.

In terms of personality, Gaudi is fundamentally kind, calm, and good-natured, acting as a gentle and easygoing counterpoint to Lina's fiery and greedy disposition. He is famously unintelligent and has a very poor memory, a trait that Lina often compares to a jellyfish. Despite his lack of book smarts, he possesses remarkable intuition and is an excellent judge of character. For instance, he instinctively understood that the mysterious Xellos was not human long before any of his companions did, though he did not see it as a pressing issue. Gaudi is also nearly as voracious an eater as Lina, sharing her great passion for food, and his patience with her is legendary, remaining loyal through her many outbursts and schemes.

His primary motivation throughout the series is to protect Lina Inverse. He first intervenes when he sees a group of bandits harassing her, believing her to be a helpless girl in need of rescue. Even after discovering she is a powerful and destructive sorceress, he continues to follow her, asserting that he is her unpaid bodyguard. This role is not just a job; he shows deep, albeit understated, affection for her. In The Slayers Next, their relationship reaches a significant emotional peak when Gaudi is captured by the powerful Mazoku (demon) Phibrizzo, forcing Lina to risk everything to save him. Later, Gaudi in turn saves Lina, and in the aftermath, the pair share a kiss, a rare moment of overt romance for the series.

His role in the story is that of the primary physical fighter and a major source of comic relief. He compensates for the group's magical reliance with his incredible swordsmanship. He also serves a narrative function; his ignorance of the world's history and magical rules forces the other, more knowledgeable characters to explain these concepts out loud, which in turn helps the audience understand the plot.

Gaudi's key relationships define much of his journey. His bond with Lina Inverse is the most central, evolving from a chance meeting into a deep, unspoken romantic partnership. He forms a good friendship with the chimera swordsman Zelgadis, whom he respects despite his monstrous appearance. He also develops a brotherly regard for the priestess Sylphiel, primarily because she is an excellent cook, and a rivalry based on mutual respect with the swordsman Zangulus, who eventually becomes a friend. During The Slayers Next, Gaudi is briefly turned into a berserk Magical Knight by the Dragon Demon Garv, forcing his friends to fight him.

In terms of development, Gaudi shows a consistent arc of growing emotional openness. While he begins as simply a dense swordsman, his experiences with Lina drive him to moments of genuine heroism and sacrifice. His character development is most pronounced in The Slayers Next, where his willingness to sacrifice himself and his profound effect on Lina's actions underscore his importance beyond mere comedic relief.

His most notable ability is his peerless mastery of the sword. He is an almost invincible swordsman, relying on physical prowess and acrobatic strength rather than magic. His signature weapon is the Sword of Light, a hilt that generates a blade of pure energy similar to a lightsaber. This blade can cut through almost anything and can even absorb and release magical spells. Although he is incapable of casting spells on his own, author Hajime Kanzaka has stated that Gaudi actually possesses a magical capacity rivaling that of Lina Inverse. However, his poor memory prevents him from memorizing the complex incantations required to use magic effectively.
