Description
Nappa is a Saiyan warrior who originates from Planet Vegeta, the homeworld of the Saiyan race. He held the rank of general in the Saiyan Army before the planet's destruction and served as a trusted attendant and combat partner to Prince Vegeta. After the genocide of his people by Frieza, Nappa became one of the few surviving Saiyans and continued to work alongside Vegeta and the low-class warrior Raditz as part of the Frieza Force, traveling across the galaxy to conquer planets and eliminate their inhabitants.

In terms of personality, Nappa embodies the stereotypical traits of a Saiyan elite: arrogant, aggressive, and obsessed with combat and destruction. He takes visible pleasure in causing devastation, as demonstrated upon his arrival on Earth when he asks Vegeta for permission to destroy a city and does so with a single energy attack. He is sadistic and enjoys toying with weaker opponents, taunting them and prolonging their suffering. Despite his violent nature, Nappa displays a degree of loyalty and deference toward Vegeta, having served as his mentor and bodyguard since Vegeta's childhood. However, his hot-tempered and impulsive behavior often clashes with Vegeta's more calculating demeanor, and he frequently disregards orders when his bloodlust takes over.

Nappa's primary motivation is the pursuit of power and the desire to serve Vegeta's goals. He is driven by a belief in the inherent superiority of the Saiyan race and revels in demonstrating that superiority through brute force. Upon learning from Raditz's scouter transmission about Earth's Dragon Balls, Nappa accompanies Vegeta to Earth with the aim of collecting the orbs and wishing for immortality, hoping that this would allow them to eventually defeat Frieza.

In the story, Nappa serves as the first major antagonist of the Saiyan Saga and is the character who truly introduces the Z-Fighters to the overwhelming power of the Saiyan race. He is responsible for some of the series' most impactful early casualties. After deploying Saibamen to test the Earth's defenders, one of these creatures self-destructs and kills Yamcha. Nappa then personally engages the remaining heroes, defeating Chiaotzu, who sacrifices himself in a self-destruction attempt that barely scratches Nappa. He also mortally wounds Tien Shinhan after the latter exhausts himself with a powerful Tri-Beam attack. Most significantly, Nappa kills Piccolo while trying to strike Gohan, which also causes the death of Kami and the temporary loss of Earth's Dragon Balls. Nappa's rampage is halted only by the arrival of Goku, who has trained under King Kai. Goku, using the Kaio-ken technique, easily overpowers Nappa, breaking his back and leaving him paralyzed. Vegeta, deeming Nappa useless after his defeat, executes him with a single energy blast, demonstrating the cold, hierarchical nature of the Saiyan warriors.

Nappa's key relationships are primarily defined by his role as Vegeta's subordinate. He has a longstanding bond with Vegeta, having been his attendant since the prince's early years, but this relationship is ultimately one-sided; Vegeta views Nappa as a tool and discards him without hesitation. Nappa also worked alongside Raditz, though the two share little direct interaction. His enemies include the entire Z-Fighter team, with his battles against Goku and the others forming the core of his role.

Nappa's development is limited due to his brief appearance in the series. He does not undergo a character arc or redemption; instead, he remains a static representation of Saiyan brutality and arrogance. His defeat and execution highlight the theme that power alone is insufficient and that those who cannot adapt or grow are discarded by their own allies.

Notable abilities include his immense physical strength and durability, allowing him to survive attacks that would kill ordinary warriors. He possesses several destructive energy techniques: the Giant Storm, a city-leveling explosion created by raising two fingers; the Bomber DX, a powerful energy sphere thrown like a baseball; and the Break Cannon, a concentrated energy beam fired from his mouth. He also demonstrates a Lightning Aura technique that enhances his melee strikes. Although he never transforms on screen, Nappa possesses a tail, indicating his ability to assume the Great Ape form under a full moon, which would multiply his power roughly tenfold. His power level is recorded at around 4000, making him far stronger than any Earth fighter at the time of his arrival.
