TV-Series
Description
Kyouko Tokiwa is a student at Jindai High School and the best friend of Kaname Chidori. She is sixteen years old and shares a classroom with Kaname and Sousuke Sagara. Physically, she is of a shorter stature with a youthful build. Her most recognizable features are her brown hair worn in braided pigtails, often tied with ribbons, and her large round glasses, which complement her brown eyes. A constant companion is her digital camera, which she carries everywhere, frequently documenting the chaotic events of her school life.

In terms of personality, Kyouko is generally humble, polite, and good-natured. She often comes across as gentle and calm, possessing a placid and easygoing demeanor that allows her to take the frequent outbursts and bizarre incidents involving Sousuke and Kaname in stride. However, this surface-level tranquility belies a more perceptive and surprisingly fierce interior. She has a sharp eye for detail, being the first among her classmates to grow suspicious of Sousuke's background and even recognizing a resemblance between him and a popular idol that others missed. Her interests are also unexpectedly eclectic, showing knowledge of obscure professional wrestling moves and an awareness of niche subcultures.

Kyouko's primary role in the story is that of an ordinary person caught in the extraordinary circumstances surrounding her best friend. She is a loyal and supportive friend to Kaname, acting as a confidante and a grounding presence. She is also the foremost proponent of bringing Kaname and Sousuke together, constantly trying to nudge the oblivious mercenary and the tsundere class representative into a romantic relationship. While she is often a source of comic relief, her role deepens significantly in the narrative of The Second Raid. Her sharp intuition allows her to sense that Kaname is hiding a heavy burden, and she feels hurt and frustrated when her friend refuses to confide in her, believing their friendship is strong enough to share such secrets.

This underlying tension comes to a head when Kyouko is taken hostage by the terrorist organization Amalgam as bait to lure Sousuke and locate Kaname. A bomb is attached to her, and she is used as a pawn in a deadly trap. During the tense moments as Sousuke works to disarm the bomb, Kyouko unleashes her pent-up confusion and fear. She confronts Sousuke directly, voicing her deep-seated questions about his true identity, why Kaname is being targeted, and why she, as a friend, has been kept in the dark. This emotional plea, born from a place of feeling like an outsider in her own life, highlights her desperation not to be seen as a mere bystander.

Following her rescue, Kyouko is caught in an explosion and suffers severe injuries, requiring hospitalization. This traumatic event serves as a major catalyst for development. The injury leaves her with lingering after-effects, such as a slight trembling in her fingers, which is thought to be more psychological than physical. The experience also leads to profound regret; she later feels remorse for the harsh words she hurled at Sousuke during her captivity, realizing the immense pressure he was under. This pivotal trauma is a key reason Sousuke feels compelled to distance himself from the school to protect those he cares about.

While Kyouko has no special combat abilities or tactical training, her notable strengths are her emotional resilience and her acute observational skills. She is one of the few truly "normal" individuals in the series, and her reactions ground the high-stakes conspiracy in a relatable human perspective. Her ability to sense the hidden sadness or burden in her friends makes her an excellent, though sometimes sidelined, emotional barometer for the main cast. In the long term, her character evolves from the pigtailed, bespectacled friend into a more mature young woman, eventually changing her hairstyle and adopting contact lenses as she recovers and moves forward with her life. In later continuations of the story, she is shown to have started a relationship with her classmate Kotaro Onodera, ultimately marrying him in the future.
