Mike Kleinhenz
Description
Mike Kleinhenz was an American voice actor known for his extensive work in the dubbing of Japanese anime series, primarily for ADV Films in Houston, Texas. He was born Michael Anthony Kleinhenz on November 14, 1951, in Cincinnati, Ohio. His path to voice acting was unconventional; he was a multi-sport athlete in college and even had tryouts with professional baseball and football teams before establishing his career in broadcasting and voice work. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 1974 with a degree in Radio and TV Broadcasting, he settled in Houston, where his voice became familiar through numerous local and national television and radio commercials.
Kleinhenz became a prominent figure in the English dubbing industry during the late 1990s and 2000s. He is frequently recognized for his portrayal of authoritative and mature characters. Among his most notable roles was Andrei Sergeivich Kalinin, the stoic sergeant major, in all versions of the Full Metal Panic! anime series, including Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid and the Fumoffu spin-off. He also voiced the enigmatic Friday Monday in the series Madlax and the over-the-top department head Kabapu in the surreal comedy Excel Saga.
His filmography includes a wide array of other significant roles, many of which are from series produced during the same era. He provided the voice for the villainous Raven in the fairy tale-inspired series Princess Tutu. He played Jin Majima in Najica Blitz Tactics and Takahashi in the cyberpunk OVA Parasite Dolls. Other credits include Legrand in Noir, Goro Suzuki in Gantz, a member of SEELE in the director's cut of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shirow Watari in RahXephon, and the voice of Lucifer in the animated film Lady Death: The Motion Picture.
Kleinhenz's career was marked by frequent collaboration with the pool of voice actors and production staff at ADV Films in Houston, working alongside talents like Andy McAvin, with whom he provided an audio commentary for the series Najica Blitz Tactics. He remained active in the industry until his sudden death from a heart attack on July 11, 2008, at the age of 56. His body of work continues to be recognized by fans of anime from that period.
