Description
Friday Monday is the enigmatic founder and leader of the Enfant organization, which operates as the primary antagonistic force. Very little is known about his past before the year 1999, when he first used his supernatural Gift to open the Door of Truth in a ritual aimed at plunging the entire world into total war, a state he believes to be humanity’s natural condition. This initial attempt was thwarted by Colonel Richard Burton, who shot Monday in the face. The bullet disfigured the right half of his face and, according to his own claim, destroyed his ability to use his Gift, forcing him to hide his injuries behind a mask. Although the ritual failed to affect the whole world, its power triggered a localized conflict in the country of Gazth-Sonika, where Enfant later established its headquarters. Monday has spent the subsequent twelve years manipulating this civil war from the shadows while searching for the two Holy Books he lost in the failed ritual, as he managed to retain possession of the first book, Firstari.
Friday Monday is a self-righteous nihilist who holds a deeply pessimistic view of human nature. He believes that morality is merely a mask worn by society to suppress humanity's innate and true desire for chaos, killing, and war. In his philosophy, acting on these darkest subconscious impulses is not sinful but is instead the righteous and natural state of being, and he considers the modern world twisted for forcing moral inhibitions onto people. His ultimate motivation is to strip away these artificial constraints and return all of humanity to an animal-like state where they act freely on their instinctual natures. To achieve this, he seeks to repeat his original ritual from twelve years prior, which requires gathering all three Holy Books and finding another person with a strong Gift, as he can no longer perform it himself.
In the story, Friday Monday serves as the mastermind responsible for the prolonged civil war in Gazth-Sonika, orchestrating political corruption, murder, and other crimes to keep the conflict alive and cover Enfant’s involvement. His central goal is to capture Margaret Burton, who possesses the rare Talent needed to open the door to the other world, so she can be used to complete the ritual that he started. He is a manipulative figure who uses his organization to abduct and coerce key individuals. One of his most significant relationships is with Carrossea Doon, a young man who was created from the spirit of Poupée, a doll that was shot trying to protect Margaret. Monday took Carrossea in and made him a high-ranking operative within Enfant, unaware of his true origins. Monday also has a direct and violent history with Richard Burton, whose interference cost him his eye and his power. In retaliation, Monday used his Gift to mind-control Burton into trying to murder his own daughter, Margaret, an act that forced the child to kill her father in self-defense. He later develops a twisted relationship with Margaret herself, whom he keeps close and manipulates, even allowing her to call him father, as he works to bend her to his will and use her power to open the Door of Truth.
Friday Monday’s character remains largely static, defined by his unwavering commitment to his nihilistic ideology. However, his situation and methods evolve as he loses his own ability to directly influence the supernatural realm. Initially a direct actor, after being shot and losing his Talent, he shifts to a more strategic role, using manipulation, technology, and the power of others to achieve his ends. His development concludes in a final confrontation where he uses broadcast recordings of the Holy Words to incite mass violence in Gazth-Sonika. He then attempts to persuade Margaret to willingly wish for humanity’s return to its basest instincts. When she ultimately rejects his philosophy, expressing her hatred for the suffering he caused, Friday Monday is fatally shot by Madlax. He dies reaching for the Holy Books, seemingly unable to understand why his worldview failed. As a Gift user, he possessed the Talent, a supernatural ability that allowed him to open the Door of Truth. His specific power was potent enough to read from the Holy Books and initiate a world-changing ritual but was neutralized by physical injury. Even without his direct power, he retained deep knowledge of the Books and their spells, such as Elda Taluta, the Words of Awakening, which he used to control others.
