Description
Gauron is a Cambodian terrorist and a central antagonist, recognized as the arch-enemy of Sousuke Sagara. His past as a child soldier during the brutal Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s forged him into a being of pure violence and tactical brilliance, utterly devoid of compassion. This history, which he shares with Sousuke, forms the dark foundation of their intertwined fates. By the time of the events in Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid, Gauron is a broken and dying man, having survived his previous encounter with Sousuke by using a Lambda Driver to shield himself from the explosion of his Arm Slave. He was rescued and hidden in Hong Kong by two of his former pupils, the Xia Yui Fan and Xia Yui Lan, who cared for his shattered body.
In The Second Raid, Gauron’s personality remains that of a violent and arrogant psychopath, but his physical state has deteriorated significantly. He is described as having lost most of his limbs, leaving him with only part of a thigh and an upper arm, while one eye is a gaping hole and his face is partially peeling away. He uses an electrolarynx to speak, yet even in this pitiable state, his mind retains its sharp, sadistic edge. His primary motivation is no longer about profit or ideology; it has narrowed to a final, obsessive fantasy involving Sousuke. Gauron is driven by a perverse love and an all-consuming need to see if the "Kashim" he once knew—a pure, emotionless killer—still exists beneath the soldier Mithril has shaped. He views Sousuke’s emotional attachments, particularly to Kaname Chidori, as a weakness and an insult to the bond of violence they once shared.
His role in the story is that of a ghost from the past, orchestrating one last cataclysmic confrontation. Gauron uses the twins to lure Sousuke to his deathbed in Hong Kong, planting clues throughout the city to ensure their final meeting. In this encounter, he does not seek a physical fight but a psychological one. Gauron spends his last moments ruthlessly taunting Sousuke, claiming that he has sent Kaname to be murdered by his pupils. This lie is a calculated blow, designed to break Sousuke’s resolve and provoke him into a rage. The strategy succeeds: Sousuke, enraged beyond reason, guns down the crippled Gauron in a brutal act of cold-blooded killing. Gauron dies with a maniacal smile, his final trick being a bomb set to detonate when his heart stops. This act embodies his twisted desire to take Sousuke with him in an intimate, violent end.
Key to understanding Gauron are his dysfunctional relationships. His connection to Sousuke is the core of his existence; he refers to Sousuke exclusively as "Kashim," the name from their past, signifying his refusal to acknowledge the man Sousuke has become. This bond is one of obsessive, violent lust. While his most explicit desires are censored in the anime, source material reveals he fantasized about killing Sousuke so he could sexually violate his corpse. He saw the young Sousuke’s emotionless eyes as beautiful and has been pursuing him ever since. His pupils, the twins, are tragic figures in this dynamic. They were found as orphans and raised solely to be emotionless assassins, effectively serving as the "replacements" for the Kashim he could never fully claim. Gauron shows them little genuine care, using them as tools in his final scheme to hurt Sousuke.
Despite his physical ruin, Gauron’s development is not one of redemption or change, but of a singular focus sharpened to a razor’s edge. He is a brilliant tactician and a master planner, always ensuring he has a contingency. Even on his deathbed, his mind crafts the perfect psychological trap. His notable abilities remain formidable even in his condition. He is a master of psychological warfare, able to get under Sousuke’s skin like no one else. His proficiency with the Lambda Driver, a piece of Black Technology that converts thought into physical force, is what allowed him to survive for this final encounter. He was also a skilled Arm Slave pilot and a soldier proficient in firearms and martial arts, though his physical state in The Second Raid prevents him from showcasing these combat skills directly. Ultimately, Gauron’s final victory is not death, but the act of shattering Sousuke’s composure and forcing him to abandon his principles for a moment of pure, vengeful murder.
