TV-Series
Description
Mannen is the Knight of Ice and the de facto leader of the three youngest members of the Leafe Knights in Prétear. He is approximately ten years old but carries a past that predates his current childlike form: sixteen years before the events of the story, Mannen, along with Hajime and Shin, died in battle against the Princess of Disaster and was later reborn as a child. This cycle of death and rebirth gives him an underlying maturity, though he expresses it through a boisterous and often childish personality.
His personality is defined by overconfidence, playfulness, and a constant need to prove himself. Mannen frequently rushes into fights ahead of the other knights, believing he can defeat demon larvae on his own, a tendency that often leads to trouble. He is easily frustrated and quick to anger, especially when older knights like Goh or Kei dismiss him because of his age. This defiance stems from a genuine desire to be seen as capable and worthy of respect, not just as a child who needs protection. Beneath his showy exterior, he is fiercely loyal to his team and deeply protective of Himeno, whom he regards as an older sister.
Mannen's primary motivation is the pursuit of recognition and adulthood. He wants the older knights to treat him as an equal and to trust him with important responsibilities. This drive often puts him in conflict with Goh, who sees him as a little brother to be disciplined, and Hayate, with whom he frequently argues. His loyalty, however, never wavers: he is committed to guarding Himeno and supporting the Leafe Knights in their mission, even if his methods are impulsive.
In terms of key relationships, Mannen forms a tight trio with Shin and Hajime. As the oldest of the three, he bosses them around and acts as their self-appointed leader, though he also looks out for them. He views Himeno as a beloved older sister, calling her Nee-chan, and often volunteers to guard her or accompany her on outings. His rivalry with Goh is a recurring dynamic: Goh scolds and punishes him, but inwardly cares for him, while Mannen, in turn, rebels against Goh's authority to prove he is not a child. His dynamic with Kei is cooler, as Kei tends to ignore him.
Throughout the series, Mannen shows incremental growth in maturity. Although he remains boastful and headstrong, his commitment to protecting others and his willingness to follow orders when the situation demands it reveal a developing sense of responsibility. He does not undergo a dramatic transformation, but his experiences with the group temper some of his more reckless impulses.
As the Knight of Ice, Mannen commands ice-based abilities. When combined with Himeno in her Prétear form, he can execute the attack Arcubus of Ice. His powers are aligned with the element of ice, allowing him to freeze enemies and create icy constructs in battle. Despite his young age, his elemental magic is a valuable asset to the Leafe Knights, particularly when his eagerness to fight is channeled effectively.
