Description
Kaworu Nagisa is introduced as the Fifth Child, a replacement pilot sent to the military organization Nerv by the secret society Seele. His true identity, however, is that of Tabris, the seventeenth and final Angel, making him an enemy of humanity despite his human appearance. Unlike other Angels, Kaworu possesses a human-like form and is born from the soul of the first Angel, Adam, which was salvaged and placed into a human body following the cataclysmic Second Impact on September 13, 2000, the same day he was born.
Kaworu exhibits a calm, warm, and emotionally open personality, contrasting sharply with the often-troubled demeanor of the main pilot, Shinji Ikari. He is remarkably philosophical, often speaking in universal terms and referring to humans as Lilim, a term denoting their descent from the seed of life Lilith. Despite this detachment, he shows a deep appreciation for human culture, notably music, and is first seen humming the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, "Ode to Joy," which he calls the finest achievement of human civilization. His primary motivation is complex; while his Angelic nature drives him to seek out Adam, the being he believes awaits him in Terminal Dogma, he also forms a genuine and powerful emotional bond with Shinji. This leads him to question his purpose, ultimately valuing the existence of humanity over his own kind.
In the story, Kaworu’s role is brief but pivotal. He replaces a psychologically broken Asuka Langley Soryu as the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02, immediately achieving perfect synchronization. He quickly befriends the isolated Shinji, offering him the unconditional acceptance and affection he has always craved. However, Kaworu soon reveals his Angel nature by taking control of Unit-02 and descending into Terminal Dogma to make contact with what he believes is Adam. Upon discovering the giant crucified there is actually Lilith, the progenitor of humanity, he realizes his mistake. Accepting his fate, he willingly allows Shinji, piloting Eva-01, to kill him, choosing to let humanity live on.
Kaworu’s key relationship is with Shinji Ikari. He serves as an idealized friend who understands Shinji’s deep loneliness without requiring anything in return, famously telling him, "I like you," and speculating that he was born to meet him. This profound connection makes the eventual betrayal and Shinji’s forced act of killing Kaworu one of the most emotionally devastating moments in the series. He also shares a mirrored, yet contrasting, existence with Rei Ayanami, as both are artificial vessels containing the souls of the first Angels—Adam for Kaworu and Lilith for Rei.
Kaworu does not undergo significant character development in the traditional sense, as his arc is short and tragic. He arrives with pre-formed knowledge and a seemingly predetermined purpose, but his interactions with Shinji cause him to exercise his free will, leading to his choice of death over destruction. His abilities are immense, befitting his status as an Angel. He possesses the strongest A.T. Field encountered by Nerv, which he can use for levitation, as an impenetrable barrier, and to control Evangelion Unit-02 remotely. As the vessel of Adam's soul, his power is on a scale capable of triggering catastrophic events.
