Akira Ishida

Description
Akira Ishida is a prominent Japanese voice actor born on November 2, 1967, in Nisshin, Aichi Prefecture. He is a graduate of Nihon University's College of Art, Department of Theatre. Ishida began his career in 1988 after joining the Ezaki Production affiliated training school, which later became Mausu Promotion. He was affiliated with Mausu Promotion until March 2009, after which he became a freelancer before joining his current agency, Peerless Gerbera.

Ishida's voice is often described as having a soft, clear, and neutral quality with a wide range, capable of delivering both high-pitched, almost feminine tones and low, resonant ones with a metallic edge. This versatility has allowed him to portray a vast array of characters across the anime industry for over three decades. One of his earliest breakout roles was Kaworu Nagisa in the seminal 1995 series Neon Genesis Evangelion, a character whose brief appearance left a lasting impression due in part to Ishida's ethereal performance. In the early 2000s, he gained widespread recognition for several major roles, including the gentle and kind-hearted Cho Hakkai in the Saiyuki series, the complex and tragic Gaara in Naruto, and the principled coordinator Athrun Zala in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and its sequel Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. His performance as Athrun Zala was particularly acclaimed, leading him to be voted the most popular voice actor in the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 2004.

Throughout his career, Ishida has demonstrated a remarkable ability to embody characters with multifaceted personalities, from the enigmatic trickster Xellos in The Slayers to the eccentric and loyal Kotaro Katsura in Gintama. His filmography is extensive, featuring prominent roles such as Zeref in Fairy Tail, Cavendish in One Piece, Fyodor Dostoyevsky in Bungo Stray Dogs, Shuichi Natori in Natsume's Book of Friends, and Akaza in the globally popular Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. More recently, his career continues to thrive with roles in a wide variety of series, including Luxion in Trapped in a Dating Sim, Guy Crimson in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, and he has reprised his role as Athrun Zala in the 2024 film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.

In recognition of his impactful performances in supporting roles, Ishida was awarded the Best Supporting Actor award at the inaugural Seiyu Awards in 2007. His work is not limited to anime; he has also lent his voice to numerous video games, including high-profile titles like the Persona 3 series as Makoto Yuki and Ryōji Mochizuki, and more recently, Kamisato Ayato in Genshin Impact and Luocha in Honkai: Star Rail.
