Description
In the anime Bokurano, the character known as Coemushi, also referred to as Koemushi or Koyemshi, is a small, strange creature that assumes the role of the children's guide and tutor following the disappearance of the initial pilot, Kokopelli. Its name is a self-given title that translates to Dung Beetle, and its physical appearance is not particularly threatening, often described as resembling a small doll or a white, bear-like or mouse-like creature with pink spots, possessing a large head and disproportionately small limbs. Despite this unassuming form, Coemushi is a being of immense importance and hidden tragedy, bound by a strict set of rules that govern the deadly game the children have been forced to participate in.

Coemushi’s personality is defined by its sharp, sarcastic tongue and a distinctly superior attitude. It expects to be treated with politeness and does not hesitate to put the children in their place when it feels disrespected, often delivering cruel or cynical observations with a calm, unsettling demeanor. The creature communicates verbally without moving its mouth, yet it is capable of smiling, an expression that likely adds to its unnerving presence. Its motivations are complex and deeply tied to its own tragic past. While it initially appears to be a simple, perhaps sadistic, overseer of the children's suffering, it is eventually revealed that Coemushi was not always a creature. It was once a human boy from a parallel Earth who himself participated in the same deadly series of battles to protect his own world. After his own conflict, he begged for a chance to survive and was transformed by his world's guide into the being that now shepherds new pilots into the same fate he once endured. This history explains its cynical and detached demeanor; its primary motivation becomes simply perpetuating the system that granted it a continued, albeit cursed, existence.

Within the story, Coemushi serves as the primary link between the children and the giant robot known as Zearth. It is responsible for transporting the pilots to and from the cockpit, though it cannot teleport directly between two points and must always pass through the cockpit to do so. It responds to the children's calls and is the entity that explains the rules of the engagement, confirming their grim reality that each victory comes at the cost of the pilot's life. One of its key relationships is with an unknown entity it is often seen conversing with between battles. This is later revealed to be its younger sister, Machi, who chose to travel with him across worlds, helping him assemble new groups of children to sign the contract. Her presence explains the more human moments of connection Coemushi occasionally displays, particularly in the manga where he expresses regret for his actions and a sense of sympathy he never thought he would feel. Another significant relationship is his antagonistic one with Kokopelli, the guide who came before him, whom Coemushi openly distrusts and regards as untrustworthy.

The character undergoes a notable development, though its arc differs significantly between the manga and the anime. In the manga, while often sarcastic and at times sadistic, Coemushi shows subtle signs of change and ultimately reflects on the tragedy of the situation. At the conclusion of the manga, after the final battle, Coemushi is restored to his human form and takes on the role of a guide for the next cycle of pilots. In this form, he introduces himself to a new group of children with a bitter, self-deprecating honesty about the fatal contract they are about to sign. Conversely, the anime portrays Coemushi as much more openly cruel and antagonistic, particularly in his attempts to force the young girl Kana into signing the contract against her will. This aggression ultimately leads to his demise, as he is shot and killed by his own sister, Machi, using a gun given to her for protection.

Coemushi possesses several notable abilities beyond teleportation and interdimensional communication. It can manifest the cockpit for the pilots and seems to have a degree of control over the rules of the game, though it is still beholden to higher powers. In one instance, it demonstrates a form of offensive teleportation, using its power to sever a gun and the hand holding it from a threatening individual. Its most significant power, however, may simply be its knowledge and its silence. As the narrator of the fatal rules, Coemushi holds the power of truth, and its cynical delivery of that truth is a weapon in itself, forcing the children to confront their despair and mortality at every turn.
