Description
Kei Tsuchiya is a supporting character who first appears as a coworker of Miki Koishikawa at the Bobson's ice cream parlor. A gifted pianist, Kei is one year younger than Miki and is introduced as a quiet, brooding, and deeply lonely teenager. Despite his prodigious talent, he harbors a great deal of trauma related to playing the piano, stemming from intense pressure and mistreatment from his former teacher. This trauma led him to stop attending his high school piano program, take a leave of absence, and leave his family home, feeling unable to cope with the demands placed upon him.

Motivated by a profound sense of isolation, Kei quickly develops strong romantic feelings for Miki after she trips and falls on him at work. His initial motivation is to win Miki's affection, which he pursues through manipulative schemes. His primary action is to find a lost medallion that is important to Miki and Yuu, and use it to lie to Yuu, suggesting that Miki no longer wants their relationship to continue. This act of immaturity temporarily drives a wedge between the main couple, but the scheme ultimately fails when Yuu sees through the deception. When Miki confronts him about his behavior, she calls him immature but ultimately forgives him, an act of kindness that becomes a turning point.

Kei’s role in the story is that of a romantic rival for Miki’s affection and a catalyst for drama between her and Yuu. His arrival shifts the tone of the series, introducing more sophisticated and emotionally complex conflicts. His most significant relationship is with Miki, who rekindles his lost love for music and gives him the confidence to face his talents again. He also has a noted animosity towards the model Suzu Sakuma early on, the reasons for which are not fully explained but may stem from her ability to accept the demands of her own talent while he struggles with his. Later, however, Suzu becomes a regular presence in his life after she is captivated by his piano playing, and over time he begins to develop reciprocal feelings for her.

Kei undergoes a significant and rapid character development. He begins as a self-centered and miserable individual who seems to want others to share his unhappiness, but he matures into a kind and thoughtful person. After his initial departure, he disappears from the main story to pull his life back together, intending to become a man worthy of Miki. When he returns much later, after Yuu has gone to study abroad in America, he is a changed person. In this later appearance, he offers Miki his sincere and unconditional support, no longer seeking to replace Yuu in her heart but simply to help her through her loneliness. This mature Kei is described as one of the kindest and most romantic male characters in the series, a stark contrast to the troubled boy he once was.

His notable ability is his extraordinary skill as a pianist and composer. Despite his emotional blocks, his talent is profound. He composes and performs an exquisite piano piece titled For You specifically for Miki during the Christmas episode, which serves as a powerful expression of his feelings for her.
