Description
Mutsumi Hōjō, known in the anime as Saburō and also by the alias 623, is a middle school student at Kichijō Gakuen in the 2014 anime series Keroro. He is a tall, lean boy with silver hair and blue eyes, often seen wearing a white bucket hat decorated with a yellow spiral emblem that symbolizes his connection to the Keronian sergeant major Kururu. Saburō leads a double life: by day he is a seemingly carefree student who frequently skips classes, and under the pseudonym 623 he hosts a popular radio show, keeping his celebrity identity hidden from most of his classmates. He is a poet, artist, and philosopher by inclination, and his artwork and poems often accompany his radio segments. His nickname 623 is derived from a Japanese number‑wordplay on his given name.
Saburō possesses an extraordinarily high IQ of 350 and excels in both academics and sports, yet his brilliance and aloof demeanor make it difficult for him to connect with his peers, especially the male students who envy his popularity. He carries himself with a calm, detached air and rarely shows panic even in serious crises, often greeting chaos with amused interest rather than fear. This unflappable nature aligns him closely with Kururu, who shares a similarly mischievous and intellectually playful disposition. The two are described as being on the same wavelength, and Kururu gave Saburō a special pen that can bring any drawing or written word to life, an ability Saburō uses both for creative expression and for occasional interdimensional travel.
In the story, Saburō serves as Kururu’s human partner and friend, and he sometimes assists the Keroro platoon’s schemes when they catch his interest, though he remains largely a peripheral figure in the main invasion efforts. He is also the object of Natsumi Hinata’s romantic crush, a fact of which he appears genuinely unaware despite his keen observational skills. This dynamic creates tension with Corporal Giroro, who is himself in love with Natsumi and often reacts jealously whenever Saburō is near her. Over the course of the series, Saburō’s character shows subtle development as he forms deeper bonds with the platoon, learns to trust others with his secret identity, and occasionally steps up to help in genuine emergencies, revealing that his laid‑back exterior hides a reliable and resourceful individual. His unique ability to materialize his drawings makes him a versatile asset, and his habit of exploring alternate dimensions with the pen hints at a restless curiosity that drives his actions.
