TV Special
Description
Athrun Zala is a central character in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and its sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, also playing a key role in the compilation films known as the Special Edition. He is born on October 29, Cosmic Era 55, in the PLANTs, a cluster of space colonies inhabited by Coordinators, genetically enhanced humans. As the son of Patrick Zala, a prominent and hardline politician who becomes chairman of the PLANT Supreme Council, Athrun is raised with significant expectations. His early life takes a turn when he is sent to a preparatory school on the moon in Copernicus City, where he meets and befriends Kira Yamato, another Coordinator. Before returning to the PLANTs, Athrun gives Kira a small robotic bird he built, a gift that symbolizes their enduring friendship.
The course of his life is irrevocably changed by the Bloody Valentine tragedy, a nuclear attack by the Earth Alliance on a PLANT agricultural colony that kills his mother, Lenore Zala. Driven by grief and a desire for retribution, Athrun enlists in ZAFT, the military force of the PLANTs. He graduates at the top of his class from the ZAFT military academy, demonstrating exceptional talent in mobile suit piloting, hand-to-hand combat, and knife-fighting. His skill earns him the status of a Red Coat, an elite soldier. He is assigned to Rau Le Creuset's team and participates in the raid on the neutral colony Heliopolis to steal advanced Earth Alliance mobile suits. During this mission, he secures the transformable GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam and is shocked to discover that his childhood friend, Kira Yamato, is now the pilot of the Strike Gundam, fighting for the Earth ship Archangel.
Athrun is characterized as a quiet, reserved, and generally benevolent individual. He initially holds a soldier's belief that following orders is the most effective path to ending the war. However, his personality is marked by deep-seated compassion and a strong sense of duty, which often conflict. This inner turmoil leads to his most prominent flaw: indecisiveness. His struggle to reconcile his loyalty to his father, his homeland of PLANT, and his mission with his personal feelings for his friend Kira and his own evolving sense of right and wrong frequently places him in a difficult position, leading others on both sides of the conflict to label him a traitor. His personal life is also shaped by political arrangements, as his father arranges an engagement for him with Lacus Clyne, the popular singer and daughter of a rival PLANT politician. Athrun shows his characteristic kindness by building her a robotic Haro, which becomes her beloved companion.
Throughout the First Alliance-PLANT War, Athrun is driven by a mix of personal and ideological motivations. He seeks to avenge his mother and fulfill his father's expectations, while also trying to convince Kira to join ZAFT, believing that as Coordinators, they are on the right side of history. His role in the story evolves from a primary antagonist to a conflicted rival and eventually an ally. His journey is marked by tragic duels, including a fight where his comrade Nicol Amalfi is killed by Kira, leading Athrun to self-destruct his Aegis Gundam in an attempt to destroy the Strike, an act that nearly kills them both. He is rescued and influenced by Cagalli Yula Athha, the princess of the neutral nation of Orb, who helps him begin to question the cycle of revenge. This period of development pushes him to defect from ZAFT, accepting the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam from Lacus Clyne to join the "Three Ships Alliance," a third-party force dedicated to ending the war for all sides. His relationship with his father becomes a critical point of conflict; when Patrick Zala reveals his intention to exterminate all Naturals, Athrun turns against him completely and plays a key role in the war's final battle, ultimately destroying the superweapon GENESIS by detonating his own Justice Gundam inside it.
In the sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, Athrun is living incognito as "Alex Dino" and serving as Cagalli's bodyguard in Orb. When a new war breaks out, he is persuaded by Chairman Gilbert Durandal to return to ZAFT and is given the ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam as a member of the elite FAITH unit. He is assigned to the warship Minerva, where he acts as a mentor to the young and impulsive pilot Shinn Asuka, though their differing ideologies create friction. As he witnesses Durandal's increasingly questionable actions, Athrun once again finds himself torn. His internal conflict reaches a peak during a battle with the Archangel, where his Saviour Gundam is critically damaged by Kira, leaving him incapacitated and forcing him to reevaluate his allegiances. After being branded a traitor and escaping an assassination attempt, Athrun is rescued by the Archangel. He recovers and ultimately pilots the ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice Gundam, once again joining forces with Kira and the others to stop Durandal's "Destiny Plan".
Athrun possesses notable abilities beyond his piloting expertise. He is a highly skilled engineer and robotics enthusiast, as demonstrated by his creation of the mechanical bird Torii for Kira and numerous Haro units for Lacus. In combat, he is renowned for his proficiency in close-quarters combat, often piloting well-rounded, high-mobility suits equipped with multiple beam sabers. His fighting style is a reflection of his disciplined training and natural aptitude, making him one of the most formidable aces in the Cosmic Era. He also possesses the SEED factor, a latent ability that grants him enhanced mental clarity and physical reflexes under extreme emotional stress.
